Since it was 102F here yesterday, I switched my CCW dress code from t-shirt and cover shirt to just an untucked t-shirt.

Lessons (re)learned:
1. An unmelted 1911 has sharp edges that are not covered by the holster. Noteably the hammer and grip safety.

2. Those edges hurt.

3. I carry the way I do for a reason. A t-shirt pads the edges just right, as well as keeping something between my sweat and my weapon.

4. Stick with what you know works. If you want to try something new, do it at home before you take it out into public. I was stuck for an hour and a half without any way to make it better. After fidgeting around for a while, I finally ended up sitting in a chair and tucking some of my shirt material between my tender skin and the hammer until it was time to leave. Tell me THAT didn't print!

5. People just don't look. Even with all of that, nobody said anything - including my wife.


Fortunately it doesn't get that hot here very often, so I won't be tempted to try it again. If I am, I'll remember this experience and talk myself out of it!

I've been uncomfortable enough that I actually went to my car, disarmed, and just left the rig there. Lesson learned, don't try to IWB with pants you haven't worn in awhile.

The grip checkering on my USP45C was pretty harsh for untucked shirt carry....P7 doesn't have any sharp edges so it does fine...

Can you send it in for a carry bevel job? Where do you live anyway

i used to carry a HK USP 45C IWB under a T-shirt. She had that stair tread tape for extra grip (on the sides of the grip)

for about the first month she would rub by lower back raw (so bad it would bleed)

but you build up a callous and get used to it :evil:

Sorry, Skunk. Two states north, three states east of you. Yeah, I could send it in for a melt, but I really can't convince myself to do it. Normally, it isn't a problem, and I didn't like carrying that way before it became uncomfortable. One of my little fetishes, I suppose, is if I'm wearing a t-shirt, it WILL be tucked in.

It's hot here in California, but at least it's the dry heat. Light concealment garments like a Coolmax shirt allow me to wear a t-shirt underneath even in the summer.

This reminds me of the time I carried a K9 in a Bianchi Belly band that twisted into an odd position. I went to sit in a restaurant bench seat and pinched myself in a most unfortunate location that made me yelp and hop back up to semi-standing to "reposition"... it was a very embarrassing time for me as I received many questioning expressions from the friends I was with.
However, in retrospect it's something I can look back and laugh at. :D

why don't you dehorn it yourself? it's not that complicated, and is much cheaper than sending it off to a smith.

Holster with high tab to protect you from the hammer works really well. I have a IWB from Backwoods Leather that has served me well for years.

Agree with Majic,

A holster with a slide guard would be a lot cheaper than dehorning your gun (possibly refinishing too). I like the ones offered by High Noon holsters too. All IWB holsters should have this feature.

a CCW gun should be dehorned anyway. do it yourself, and don't worry about refinishing, since the finish will come off if you carry as often as you should.

I always wear a tank top tee (wife beater) under my shirts. Expecially if its a tee shirt. My holster (Comp-Tac Undercover Pro) has a slide guard on it too but I dont like the plastic on my skin, expecially down here where its blazing hot.

Yep, that's me. Tank top or regular T under the shirt between me and the holster, a Milt Sparks Executive Companion. It's got the shield, it just doesn't cover the hammer and the tip of the grip safety. So I'll dehorn those things, thank the good Lord for stainless steel, and continue on my merry (tucked in) way!
