Contender for hunting?

I always see people shooting these off of bench rests but wonder how they do free standing. What I'm looking for is:
1)Something between my 10/22 and MN 91/30 in terms of caliber.
2)MOA accuracy to make the range challenging.
3)Able to take coyote, fox or beaver at 100-150yds with .223 or similar.
I'm looking at rifles but this offers the advantage of swapping barrels to suit what I want to shoot.
My other guns are fine shooters, but they don't group inside a quarter at 50-100yds at the range.
So my question is this: Are these pistols accurate enough and light enough to be effective in the woods?
Thanks

Hi Dispatch...
They will always be as good in the field as you can make them.

What I mean is are they as steady in the field or are they so heavy/unwieldy that they are only suitable on sandbags or against a rest.
I'm a steady shot, but I'm looking for something MOA off of a rest and Minute of Fox at 100 yds.

My .223 barrel will shoot 1.1 inches at 200 yards and my 30-30 ackley barrel shoots around 1.2 inches at 100 yards and will kill anything my .223 won't. There is a sling that helps stabilize the pistol while shooting offhand. The first deer I shot offhand at about 70 yards and it died instantly. I don't waste time with rifles now.

What kind of pistols do you have, just the BP and .22 listed in your sig? How good are you with those? You can shoot a Contender only as well as you can shoot any other pistol, though the guns themselves are capable of MOA accuracy.
Seriously, it all depends on how good a shot you are with a pistol. A Contender will do its part if you do yours. A rifle will be much easier to shoot, but on the bright side, you can get a shoulder stock for a Contender, as long as you put on a barrel longer than 16" before putting the stock on, and take the stock off before swapping barrels back.

 Contenders have been used for hunting for decades, for everything from squirrels to elephant. They will do if you will.

My .223 contender with a 14 inch compensated barrel will cut a cloverleaf at 50 yards (the longest range nearby). Yes, this was shot off a rest, but the real trick is to mount a harris bipod on it. You'd be foolish not to use any available rest while hunting. If you had to use it offhand, then your skill would determine the max range at which you would shoot.

I wish that the BATFE would make an SBR exception for the Contender, I mean it's a single shot firearm, how many gangbangers have the finesse to use such a precision weapon?

I've been handgun hunting for a lot of years and I've been really successful. Rarely do I use rifles, but I never take long shots free hand. I guess I'm not that good because I'm allways looking for something to lean on or use as a rest. I find it hard to believe anyone else is taking 100+ yard handgun shots free hand.

After shooting Skeet targets with one....with the .410 barrel...
Made sense to use one to fell a few quail and doves.
That was so much fun, squirrel and wabbit hunting was a hoot!
Fella used his to take deer and all down on the property.
Deer hear and smell his old truck and here they come out to see him.
I was just messing with it, neat gun, lots of fun.

I can shoot the 10" 32-20 in this pic pretty well off hand. I find that with the Herrett grips it balances better than any of my wheelguns.

But with my 6tcu, there ain't no shooting it off hand regardless of what grips you have on it.
