Bubbaizing a rifle mag - increasing capacity?

Please keep the flames low....

I am in California, which creates some limits. I have a couple of cases of 7.62 ammo.....
Was thinking about getting a Savage 99 or a Browning Lever - they are around $500. Then taking the magazine and trying to increase the capacity from 4 to 10.

Any thought on how hard this would be to do? They do not stick down, so I would be pretty hard to void a seam,

Thank you

Richard

Sometimes you can play around with the follower, or use a thinner spring to get a extra round in a magazine, but jumping from 4 to 10?

I'd think you'd have to build a new magazine all together.

If you have (preferably) a TIG welder, you could cut yours in half, do the same with a M-14 magazine, then cobble them together. Using the top of yours, and the bottom part & spring from the M-14 mag, it should fit into the reciever, and have the increased capacity you're looking for.

Its been done for various submachine guns. Takes a little talent with the welder and patience in getting everything to line up so the follower does not hang up on the inside of the weld. Basically you take the bottom off of one mag, take the feed lips off another and then Tig weld them together. Will need a new spring. If it fits the M-14 spring would not be a bad idea. Look for another mag in the same caliber and measure on if possible before buying one to see if it fits.

IIRC, CA has a 10 round limit, so you couldn't (legally) go over that. Plus you would ruin a very expensive magazine (the BLR mag costs about $60; I don't know what the Savage runs) and end up with nothing.

On one of the forums...can't recall which...there was a guy who was apparently a pretty good fabricator who mated an M14 magazine to a
M-77 Ruger bolt rifle. Pretty sure it was detachable, and it worked perfectly. They're available in 5/10/20 round capacities, so you could do it and be legal in California. It could be done in .243 and 7mm-08 as well as .308 Winchester/7.62 Nato. Any cartridge that shares the basic .308 case diameter and OAL.

Wish I hadn't lost track of it. He gave some pretty well-detailed instructions.
Shouldn't be too hard to figure out, though. Hmmmm...Maybe a winter project is in the makin' here. I've got a few M-77s and a few M14 magazines.

A long while back I modified a Mossberg bolt action in .308 with a hinged floor plate to run on modified M14 magazines. I had 4 20 round mags and 1 5 round magazine that worked perfectly. I wish I still had that rifle.

I bought magazines like a fiend before the California ban! BUnches of 33 round Glock 9 mags for $32 at B&B, a Beta C Mag for $289. Mini 14 mags, Mini 30 mags, M 14 Mags, FN Mags, etc.
When the Federal Ban when into place, I sold most of them out of state - the 33 round glock mags for about $120 each, I think I got close to $500 for the Beta C.

But I still have a mixed collection.

Just bought a BLR mag for $22 - I will see if it mates up to something else I have. I guess it would be ajudgement call to say if this is "modifying" a pre-existing, or building a mag. If it is close, I would say modifiying, and I will only do it if it is close.

Otherwise, I might just make a 10 rounder.

If anyone has more advice, or knows some-one who would do the work, please let me know.

thank you

Richard

The only Savage Model 99 that I had any contact with (in .300 Savage)had an intergral rotary magazine made of brass. Was this ever replaced with a detachable magazine?
