The gun you wish you liked

I truly wish I could like USPs, P-32s, and Beretta 92s. Those controls and monstrous grip on the USP makes it impossible for me, but man, I would love to have an H&K. P-32s...I wish they didn't look so much like toys. But as a BUG or go-anywhere-gun they rock. And the Beretta. So many angles, so big of a grip. Yet you can make them so uber-tactical!
What guns do you wish you could like but just can't.

I bought a P220 a couple years ago based strictly on reputation & ended up w/ a lemon. Since then, I haven't found one I liked...on of these days, I know I'll find one, but for now, I'll stick to my USP's & 92fs's ;)

My Smith PC627 8 shot. The gun is awesome. It is well made, off the scale on the cool factor, holds 8 .357 maggies, uses moon clips......the list goes on and on.
But no matter what I do that big SOB is just too big for me to shoot well. Single action I am pretty dead on but double action.......forget it. The gun is just too big for my small mits, so alas I have traded it. Bittersweet as I love looking and owning the gun but I am not a safe queen kind of guy. My guns must all be shot and used to an extent and the PC627 was becoming nothing more then a very expensive paperweight.

Sigs.
I have been trying to warm up to them for years. The bore feels too high and the slide release is too far back. The more I fondle them, the more I like them, but I have been doing so for the last 6 years. I think my fingers are just too long.
Maybe one day...
BTW, my favorite handguns are LARGE framed autos and revolvers, so that may be the problem.

Glocks.
Simple, reliable, light weight, low bore axis, consistant trigger, lots of accesories, and they move my soul as much as the fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
I have owned two and sold them both due to a serious lack of interest.
I still recommend them to most people, but I just don't like them.

The Ruger SP101 in 22lr - the windage only sight blade looks like it was added as an after thought! Would not be hard for Ruger to produce this revolver with the same fully adjustable rear sight used on their other revolvers like the Single Six. If the SP101 22lr had a real rear sight I would consider buying one.

Glocks - lightweight, reliable, easy to maintain - but they point high, have blocky grips, and, worst of all, are fundamentally dangerous for carry in my not so well informed opinion because of that nonsensical trigger design.
1911 - I can't find anything good to say about them, but everyone goes nuts over them so I keep telling myself I'm missing the point. The grip is too thin, too few rounds, too big.

Well, I do like them I wish I liked them enough to have kept them:
Colt 1911's, Beretta 92FS, and H&K USP:
I found guns that better fulfill their roles than these 3. The handguns have active safeties which I don't need. The 92's and USP's are larger/bulkier than they need to be. And I also don't seem to shoot them as well as some other full size guns. I'd never rule out owning one of them again but just to have something different.
S&W 686 2 1/2":
Inefficient sizewise and heavy. I'd prefer to go with a .357SIG auto now. Although it was fun to shoot at the range :p
Ruger MKII:
What's not to like about this classic .22 pistol? Field stripping and putting it back together again.
Ruger Vaquero .45 LC:
Loved shooting this gun but cleaning lead out of barrels and cylinders is something I don't look forward to. Why are there few (or no) .45LC in FMJ available?
Walther PPK/SIG P232 (Never owned):
Two very attractice guns for defense/CCW. But today's subcompact 9mm's make them less and less attractive. And PPK reliability seem to be mixed.

Glocks: Cheap, easy, wash in the dishwasher, cheap, lots of selection, cheap.
Just can't hit the barnside of a broad with them. If I shot a 2" group with a Sig or 1911, I'd pick up a Glock and shoot a 18" group. Tried and tried and tried and just couldn't get one to work for me. And that little trigger doohickey gives me a blister.
HKs: Not cheap, but oh so tactical and cool. I guess I really wanted to like them because they're oh-so-expensive! Same problem as Glocks--just can't hit a danged thing.
Guess I'll stick to Gold Cups and vintage Colt revolvers. And Sigs. And Berettas.

My 2nd 1911 (and first one that worked) was an older Kimber Classic Stainless Target model. The gun was awesome in every way. But I never really... liked it that much. Something about it put me off. Which is awfully strange, when you consider that my favorite guns are 1911s.

Sitting here thinking, "I've never met a QUALITY
gun that I did not like"!:uhoh: Some I like better (SIGS)*
than other's (H&K's, Glock's Beretta's and Sig-Pro's); but
all said and done there are lots of really good ones out
there such as Smith & Wesson revolvers (and of course
the Model 39-2), Colt's, and Ruger's. Add to that the
fact that Taurus is in the process of making a run for the
title of "Gone But Not Forgotten" comeback of the year
with its "Tracker" series of firearms.
Also, a real good candidate for comeback of the year
award has to be the Walther series of handgun's.

I'd like to never give them another thought, but I can't pick up a gun mag without seeing 3 articles about them.

1911's here too. I like the idea of a .45 caliber 185gr. bullet at 550ft./lbs and a nice single action trigger. But I just can't get over the grip safety! If Colt made a Series 70 without the grip safety I would own one tomorrow! I'll probably still get one anyways though as they seem to be the only full sized autos I drool over anymore other than old Berettas or Browning Hi-Powers.
I hate having to look over the rows of old junk, Glocks, P99's, USP's, Beretta NEOS and other assorted uberplastic crap to find the nice guns.

I really wish I could like High Powers and CZ-75's. Objectively, I know they're fine pistols, but they just don't do a thing for me. I shoot them well and they fit my hand well, but every time I hold one, the words "Eh, just another dull service pistol..." go through my mind. I know they deserve better than that, but I can't help it. Oh well, I eventually saw the light on S&W wheelies and the 1911, so maybe I'll have a road to Damascus experience with these fine shootin' irons, too.

They are great for all the reasons people have listed, but they just don't work for me. They point weird, the trigger pinches, and I can't hit jack with them. The 9mm models aren't too bad though, I might get a 19 someday just for funzies.

I wish I liked 1911s better, they are just O.K. in my book but life would be so much easier if I was really into them. They make one for anybody and they are for the most part really nice guns. They just leave me with the feeling that there is something better out there.

Wow - surprised at all the 1911 detractors! I use to feel that way to a certain degree many years ago until I had the oppurtunity to shoot a well built , that is , custom 1911 45 ACP. My opinion changed immediately! Part of what makes shooting enjoyable to me is to actually hit what you are aiming at on a consistent basis - a good 1911 allows me to do this better than any other semi auto centerfire pistol. In the picture the top 2 targets were fired @ 50 yards (right) for 20 shots and 25 yards (left) and tp top things off - they were shot one handed. The bottom was fired using a Sig P220 @ 50 ft for 10 shots - two hand hold. Also , the 1911 grip fits me better than any Glock , Sig , Smith , Beretta or any other semi auto.

Glocks. They have AWFUL triggers. The trigger guard rubs the knuckle on my middle finger. In a shootout I would probably shoot someone in the foot because they point weird. But different stokes for different folks. Many people love them. They remind me of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Japanese bikes are quicker, faster, more comfortable and more reliable but people will spend $20,000+ on a Harley. You either get it or you don't.
To each their own. Live well.

I really wished I could like 1911s. They are such good looking, cool and classic guns, I just don't have much use for them. I don't like the caliber they usually come in, as - compared to other calibers - it's too heavy and expensive for the performance it offers. :(
Maybe I could like a 1911 in 10mm...
...if it was a double stack one that I'd consider at least at par with a Glock 20. ;)

Herr Stahl,
You don't like the 45! That's cause you're not American, yet. Come over here, eat some huge steaks with apple pie for desert, watch John Wayne movies every Saturday, and you quickly be all about the 45. The 45, when it takes off in it's modern form with stronger brass that allows higher velocities, will be one of the calibers of the next century.
I wish I could like the Makarov. It's reliable as all hell and it has that classic Soviet mystique about it, but it's in a relatively weak caliber, relatively heavy, and the recoil is snappy and unpleasant (considering the weak round). Strictly speaking from a utility perspective, a Kahr P9 or P40 will fill that niche far better than the Mak.

HK P7. The more I shot the gun the less I liked it. Intellectually, I love the gun, but in the field I grew to hate it. On the good side, it held its value and I was able to sell it used for close to the NIB purchase price.
Zeke, try Ruger again. Their customer service is now outstanding. I've had the opportunity to use it a couple times and they have never disappointed me. For example, I had a MkII damaged by some double-charged ammo. Ruger replaced the receiver and got the new gun back to me in three weeks. They then sent Remington the bill. No questions asked.

It would have to be Glock. I really, really want to like the G19; I love its size and *gasp* looks. It's the trigger that does it in for me I think. That was the major reason I picked the P99 over it.
p.s.- Wondernine, while I realize that we all have different opinions on firearms, I think its hardly fair to call Glocks, P99's and USP's (cant really speak for the NEOS) crap. I think that these guns are great in that they are reliable, low maintenance and decently priced. I know that my P99 has been a great first gun with ~2500 flawless rounds and counting...

Glocks. They all point way high for me. My model 19 has had, possibly, 100 rounds through it in the two years I've had it.
CZ-75. I have one that was given to me as a gift. It does not excite me. Less than a box of ammo through it.
1911. Have a Springfield. Even had some minor customizing done on it. Accurate. Reliable. Sits in the safe. That is especially sad because when I was a kid back in the 1970's, owning a 1911 was like the grail to me. Just off the top of my head, I find that the SW 4566 and the HK USP were 45's I liked more.
Ruger Blackhawk. Have one in .357 that was a gift five or six years ago. Couldn't tell you the last time I shot it. It just doesn't feel right in my hand.
Harrington and Richardson Model 999. Another one I wanted badly when I was a kid. Finally got one in the mid-90's. What an anti-climax. Gave it to a very close friend as a wedding gift. He and his wife loved it, still have it, and shoot it often.
Ruger MkI and MkII. Have one of each. The improvements from the MkI to the MkII were pretty minmal, IMO. If there wasn't such a thing as gun scrubber, I don't think I'd bother shooting them at all because of the dumb@$$ stripping method. I know how to do it and it doesn't really give me problems, but it is still a needless PITA.
Ruger centerfire autos. They don't fit my hand well at all, are needlessly bulky (like just about everything that comes from "Mr. Canned Ham's" factory) and every time I have fired one at a rental range or with a friend, I sooner or later had an ejected casing smack me right in the forehead.

As a 1911 fan I am supposed to appreciate the Browning High Power because it is apparently a 1911 with the the benefit or 20 years of firearms evolution put into its design. I can't stand this pistol. I have been bitten by every one I have ever had the displeasure of firing and nothing short of having Ted Yost weld me up a proper grip tang would prevent it. I am not interested in an aftermarket mod just to avoid bleeding and buy other guns instead.
I also have a despise/desire thing going with the Glock 20. A friend has one and I borrow it from time to time. I love the idea of an easy to tear down 15 shot 10mm pistol I could bury in the backyard when the antis come for it and it would still function a year later.;) (Or so its fans say). However, every time I grip the pistol on the draw I feel as if I am going to shoot over the berm because the pistol seems to be pointing "up" about 45 degrees subjectively. I can get over this effect during a range session, but it gives me the willies everytime I do a draw and it happens again. Maybe Springfield will get IM Croatia to one day make an XD-10 to compete with it.

Glock. For some reason they don't do it for me (yet there are other polymer guns that I like) and for some reason I want to like them and see what it seems 90% of those who frequent gun forums see in them. At least half the time I'm in a gun shop I'll handle one and dry fire it and try to talk myself into not minding the trigger so much and also try to talk myself into the price being justified (it must be $100+ better than a XD9 and $150-200 better than the CZ 100). I probably will eventually break down and get one at some point (the 26 is a nice size and might make a nice occasional alternate CCW when I get to a CCW state). Maybe then I'll "see the light" on Glocks.

My main problem is that I look at most pistols as tools (and in some cases works of art) so when I look at a given pistol my first question is "What does this gun do that X doesn't do just as well or better?"
Ex. Sigs....high quality, accurate, two-tones are beautiful, outstanding reputation...but......glocks and 1911s have a better trigger, lower bore axis, are almost as accurate, are much more affordable (well the glocks are anyway) and are slimmer in just about every caliber.........same reason I don't get excited over pretty much any DA/SA semi-auto......with the exception of the CZ line.....;)
That being said...a well rounded collection must have a SA cowboy gun, a 4" .357, and a .38 snubbie........all of these have more modern alternatives, but these are just classics IMO.

Taurus PT100. Got it for a song. It's in great shape, reliable, quite accurate with 180 gr. ball, and has the controls where they belong. The decocker is even a nice touch.
But it just doesn't feel "right" in my hand. The grip is blocky, even with Hogues. It's harder for me to hide than a 1911 or even a CZ97B, and "open" carry is frowned upon, though not illegal, where I live so I never carry it.
A perfectly nice pistol with all of the necessary features that I like, but it leaves me cold.

I prefer a single action trigger and an external safety, and that means 1911. I wish there was a greater variety of modern handguns manufactured with this trigger/safety configuration. Oh well. Peacemakers and Glocks.
The Single Action Army is so popular, part of history, and is accepting of the most lavish custom work. I just don't get a buzz from handling or shooting them.
I've owned two Glock 17s, one 19, and have shot the .40 in all models. While durable, reliable, light, and easy to care for, they are dull to handle and shoot.
I envy others for their ability to see the magic in these guns.
