This rimmed Russian round is widely popular in this country now thanks to the large influx of Mosin-Nagants in recent years. It also continues as the cartridge for the SVD sniper rifle and the PK series of machine guns. How does this round compare to the 7.62mm NATO as far as overall effectiveness?

Its about as powerfull as the Nato (308), more on a par with the 30/06. Surplus ammo prices are great so its cheap to shoot.

It's a pretty good round! There's certainly more premium ammo available in .308 Winchester(if your 7.62x51 gun can shoot that), but there some pretty decent SP ammo available for x54R also.

If you're shooting something like a Finnish M/39 and handload, it can be real darn accurate also.
