First Handgun, What was yours? Mine was...

THe first handgun I had use of for a couple of years
was a Hi-Standard Dura-Matic. The Dura-Matic was
a Semi-Auto blowback .22 LR. I visited my Aunt in
September and mentioned some of the handguns
I have acquired in recent years. She brought out what
she called her 'little' gun. She brought it out and all
the years rolled back. IT was the Dura-Matic. It was
nice handling the handgun I cut my teeth on once more.
IT will be handed down to her son. My uncle let me use
it for a couple of years and then took it back because his
son was getting of age to experience it. I then took
money I had at age 14 mowing lawns and my Dad matched it
and got a S & W Model 18 so I learned the revolver after
starting with a Semi-Auto.
Getting back to the Hi-Standard and handling it after 40
years. I pulled the slide back and was surprized to find
that the safety was in the position where you find the slide
lock/release on a 1911. The safety was on the
TH side of the frame opposite the the slide lock/release
All I thought was what a weird set up for the controls.
The DA Model 18 S & W was much simpler in operation
and for a first time handgunner or first gun period is much
easier to operate.

My first handgun (that I purchased) was a gen1 Glock 17, purchased the day after my 21st birthday.
That was followed by an HK USP9mm, then a ParaOrd P14, then a Kimber Gold Combat stainless pre-series II, which is the only one of my first batch of handguns I still own.

When a young teenager my first handgun was a 22 Zip gun I made.
Even though back then it was legal for kids to own guns, kids had no money, adults either.
We would buy a half box of 22's, fifteen cents, at the neighborhood grocery store.
My first store bought handgun was a Beretta 25cal Minx that I bought out of a gun magazine when I was 17 or 18.
The gun was delivered to the house by the USPO.

I'm a bit shame to say, but it was a snub nose .22LR Arminus "Burgo Model"
that I purchased from the old K-mart store in Midfield, AL for the sum of
$42.50. I kept it for many moons; finally selling it for $25 to my (then new)

My first gun was given to me by my step-dad. It was the morning of my 16th birthday and he called me into the master bedroom and told me to sit down. He told me about how he thought I was ready and mature enough for his gift and how proud he was of me. He then reached into his closet and handed me a black plastic case. I opened it to reveal a Colt 1991A1 Compact in .45 ACP, his first gun. It is my most coveted firearm in my small but growing collection.
As for the first gun I have bought, I purchased a Mossberg 500 Persuader when I got back from deployment.

S&W Model 10 38 Spcl. I was about 12 or 13 and my dad was picking up some summer school classes at UC Berkley. Wasn't much for a kid to do around town, so I haunted the gunshops. I found a Ruger Bearcat and took my dad in to take a look. He wasn't a "gun person" (not an anti, just not a gun person). Anyway, he took one look at the S&W next to that little Bearcat and said "we need to get a real gun". Worked for me! I had a ton of fun with that old gun. Brings back fond memories. That was almost 50 years ago -- both the S&W and Dad are now gone.

My first was an Iver Johnson double action revolver, looked like a single action. It was cheap and that was all that mattered. (NY requires you to be approved for a permit, once approved you had a certain amount of time to purchase a handgun and get the actual permit. Car troubles just before I got approved ate my gun savings.)

Well, many many years ago, when I was young, dumb, and poor...
My first handgun was an Iver Johnson Young America in 22 Long. I paid $30 for it at an auction. I'm not sure which end was more lethal. The timing was off and it would spit lead out the cylinder gap like crazy. I shot it anyway. Like I said, I was young and dumb. When I got a little older and wiser, I sold the gun to Numrich for parts.

First handgun that I ever fired, watched my dad shoot it from the time that I could toddle along on camping trips, watched my dad carry it on countless hunting trips. Before he died it was the one and only thing he placed in my hand and said "I want you to have this".
... and my kids see me carry it on countless hunting trips, they watch me shoot it from the time they can toddle, and it's my number one tool for introducing new shooters to the sport. It is my highest hope that I too can pass it on to someone who will cherish it as much as I and my dad did.

Lots of .22 LRs
I recalled a bit more of getting the S & W
Model 18. In a nearby larger town I would
window shop on family shopping outings at a
Sporting Goods/Pawn shop. I was eyeing some
of the used ex-WWII handguns. WHen I got
enough for the P-38 for $35. ( 1964 ) I got my
Dad in there and showed it to him.
THe dealer got it out of the case then he
took my Dad aside as I was hadnling it
The gun dealer did well imo suggesting the
S & W Model 18 in .22 LR. I got a lot more
shooting out of it than the 9MM ammo would
have cost me, that's why my Dad matched
what I had saved so I could afford the $ 78
for the Smith. He called it an early xmas

Ruger MkII Standard Auto. 179.00+tax. Has had so many thousands of .22s through it, I couldn't even begin to count. Was my only gun for years. Has had one part go out, the recoil spring guide -- and kept functioning perfectly in spite of it.

I don’t see why. For many a first gun was purchased when young and little money was available. That was true for me. My first gun was a Rossi .38 Special. I had no QC issues with it and it worked flawlessly. This was 25 or so years ago and I don’t recall the model, perhaps an M31? In any event I sold it like a fool.
Don’t sell any of your guns, you’ll regret it. Or if you must sell it make sure it’s not the only caliber/kind of gun you have.
I hope next to get a 1911, not sure yet which one.

East German Makarov.
I had taken a brief vacation to south Alabama and had stayed in a rough neighborhood. I felt like I wanted/needed a defensive weapon, and I was determined that I would not need a gun but not have one again.
After my return home, I stopped by the usual pawn shop where I had previously purchased several rifles (they had good prices). Being a college student at the time, I didn't have much money on hand. I had set a budget of $200. My reasonable choices in this range were a Norinco Tokarev in 9mm, or the 9x18 Makarov. I asked the guy at the shop which one he thought was better, and he told me he had no idea about either. Knowing little about either myself, I chose the Makarov because it seemed better made, as well as smaller (I intended on getting a concealed carry permit soon).
$180 later, I had (what I later found out to be) an East German Makarov. I made the right choice. It shoots very nicely.

My first handgun was a surplus CZ52, I paid $99 for it. It shot well enough, but was rather ungainly and not very useful for self defense.
Keeping with my tiny budget, I then bought a Bulgarian makarov. After I was old enough to do so I carried it. Never had an issue with it, and still have it. It's since been refinished because I've worn the bluing off the front-strap and areas of the slide, but it still works great after thousands of rounds.
My first new gun was a Glock 17, 3rd gen. It works. It might be a square looking utilitarian gun, but I will never get rid of it. It was one of my first major purchases. Not only that, when the serial number is read phonetically, it sounds like one is saying a certain explicative about another caliber. I'll leave that to the imagination I guess.

My first was a Glock 21. I decided I did not like it because of the huge size and poor ergonomics.
After that I tried several revolvers: 6" Smith & Wesson 66, 4" Ruger GP100, 6" Ruger GP100, 4" Smith & Wesson 686, and a Smith & Wesson 642. I decided I do not like revolvers because of the weight and long double action trigger pull.
After that I thought the 1911 would be perfect based on the reputation for excellent triggers. After two Kimbers and two Colts, 4 1911s in total, I decided I do not like 1911s because of the weight.
After that I thought a polymer gun would be the way to go. After my experience with the Glock 21, I wanted to try something smaller and more ergonomic. I bought a Smith & Wesson M&P Compact in .40 S&W. I decided I did not like it because of the way .40 S&W recoils.
After that I bought a Smith & Wesson M&P full size in 9mm.
Now I have my first gun. Or at least, the first gun I want to keep.
(Well, to be technical I still have my Smith & Wesson 642. I don't enjoy shooting that little pocket rocket, but having a gun that I can conceal in almost any clothing is too good to sell.)
It only took me 12 (yes, twelve) tries.

Very comfortable grips, but I really didn't like the Buckmark's overall design very much.
Within the first few months of owning that gun, I shot the gun until the barrel came loose. I didn't like the idea of owning a gun that could fall apart if you didn't tighten a screw adequately. I decided that it was time to go for a more robust gun. I replaced it with a Ruger Single Six Hunter. I'm still not used to it, but I'm shooting it a little better now. I haven't been shooting as much as I'd like. I'm sure that I'd be much further along if it weren't football season.
Its funny, I'm a pretty darn good shot with my .357 magnum revolver, but I am a pretty lousy shot with my .22. I'm still getting used to the trigger and 7.5" barrel. I'm sure that I'll be fine.

Mine was a Dan Wesson model 15-2VH .357, blued, six inch barrel. Purchased new from a hardware store when I was 15 years old. Ok, my parents bought it for me with my money. Paid $251 for it. It is still the most accurate revolver I ever shot. Got rid of it long ago, however. Another of my firearms selling regrets.

A S&W .38 Special revolver of a long-forgotten model. Handed to me by my father as I prepared to take a train 1,200 miles to my grandparents' house to pick up a '54 Chevy that my grandfather was giving me for my sixteenth birthday (which had been two days before — it took two days to get the drivers license I had to have to drive the car back home). It took three days to drive home (alone). At the first night's stop, the man who trained me to handle firearms safely (ex-cavalry officer) saw the pistol in the car, inspected it, and made me clean it. He told me to tell my father that the pistol was dirty — I wasn't that dumb, even at sixteen. When I got home, I took the pistol to my father, but he just told me to keep it. Sadly, I traded it for a reissue Colt Single Action Army the following year (when Colt began making them again in the 1950s).

First handgun? A crossman CO2-powered revolver when I was about 7. I'd go into the backyard with a box of pellets (BBs were verboten in the house) and shoot at about 25 feet, usually at targets like pennies. or the raised pullers on soda cans (not the can itself). It's also the only gun I've ever "hunted" with... shooting rats we scared out of a wood pile. It killed them quite dead.
First cartridge handgun? That's a harder question. My parents had guns but they weren't really mine even when I had unrestricted access to them. I'd say the first that was inarguably mine was probably my .455 Webley MkII (antique). I bought it as a sort of silent protest to California's dumb laws... they make people jump through hoops and wait and suffer to get a .22 but I can place a phone call and have a webley shipped to me UPS ground.
I think the stories in this thread are great though... it's interesting to see the spectrum from people who went out as adults to buy their first handgun all the way to people who had guns almost literally from the cradle. It pays to remember that spectrum too. The range of backgrounds surely affects what we each consider normal or reasonable.

My truely first handguns came to me at the same time, an OLD S&W .30 special revolver, I believe the madle was refered to as an MP style one but I might be slightly off.
The other was a modle 1934 Mauser pocket pistol in 7.65 browning (.32 ACP).
Both weren't really shooters. The revolver was a bit more of a piece to look at and the mauser was a bad jammer.
My "first" handgun was a Sig 239 .40 S&W and is the only one of the three I still have.

Well, I'm embarrassed to admit it, but what the hey......wanted the "James Bond" Walther PPKS in 380 cause it looked cool.....(I was young, what can I say!) Quickly learned that, while accurate, it beat the hell out of the tang of my hand. Blowback, you know, and my small hands didn't help. Quickly graduated to a 45 acp Colt, and loved it. No problems shooting it. Pretty much stuck with the 45, started with Officer's, full size for competition, and Commander size for carry. Got tired of always messing with the Colts parts and tweaking them, switched to Sig Sauers. VERY accurate, and no tweaking!
Of course, now I carry a Sig GSR, so I'm back to the 1911 style, lol! My favorite.....:D

My first piece was given to me from my father upon successfully completing a degree in Engineering. After the ceremony, my father walked up to me, shook my right hand and placed a NIB Beretta 92FS into my left hand.
He looked me right in the eye and said, "Here, you'll need this......"
Still have that pistol today and it shoots like a champ. It wasn't the sexiest, trendiest, or even best pistol on the market. The one thing it was (reliable and effective), and the message from my father stick with me to this day (if you're gonna be on your own, you're going to need some tools).
Glad I never let go of the pistol or the simple message.

I'd say this is most surprizing in that it's a thread I started
but didn't expect to be commenting in the page #5 of it. As
Ed Ames noted it's interesting to hear of the different generations
and economic as well as personal preferences that influenced
what this membership has in terms of experience with a first
Handgun. Hey didn't Ed Ames play the Indian sidekick to Davey
Crockett in the old 50s series ? Guess they just had flintlockes
Humerous aside
Oh wait the classic Ed Ames on Johnny Carson Ed Ames had played
the indian and his sidearm was a tomahawk so when Ed was a guest
on The Tonight SHow Johnny had him throw the old
tomahawk at a man sized full silouhette - Ed threw the
tomahawk and planted the hammer blade right in the
crotch of the target - Johnny looked at it as the
handle was pointing up as ahem a man's personal might
be called at the ready if yah know what I mean Johnny
had the killer punch line... Gee I didnn't know he was
jewish...

Springfield XD 9 Service. No longer own it.
Great gun, not great for me. I never did fit me quite right, and I never could get used to the trigger pull, not to mention the trigger safety that always dug into my finger. Plus, while firing it I could feel the polymer frame flexing in an odd sort of way that I found to be distracting. Consequently, I never could shoot it consistently well.
I see why people like them; just not my cup of tea.

First I ever fired was some kind of a Single Action 22, possibly an old three screw Ruger, but I didn't know enough back then to know. It belonged to a friends father, and we'd sneak it out to the pond and shoot at frogs with it. Note, I said "Shoot at." I don't recall ever hitting any.
The first one I ever carried was a really nice Colt 38 that was issued to me on a security job. No qualifying, no training. They just handed me the Colt, six rounds of LRN ammo, and a Sam Browne belt and holster. I sure would like to have that gun. I must have dry fired it a million times. I think it had the best trigger I've ever felt.
The first one I ever owned was the classic Smith & Wesson, Model 19 "Combat Magnum" with a 4" barrel. I still kick myself for trading it off. :banghead:

Glock 17. It's still by far my favourite gun today. But I must admit that I shot it very bad when I first got it. But I had nobody to teach me anything, so it was not really the gun's fault. But a .22 or .357/38 revolver is probably the best gun for a complete noob.

Mine was a 6" S&W 686 in which I shot mostly .38spcl through due to the cost of ammo. Absolutely loved that gun, and cannot even remember the reasoning behind getting rid of it....sad. :(

A used Ruger MKI
Bought it around 2002. Made in the early 80`s as far as i recall.
Really shiney with practically no wear on the finish but the previous owner had destroyed the barrel to the point that it wouldnt group less than 8" at 25yards. Tried firelapping it which brought the groups down to 3".. Then the pin that keeps the firing pin from slamming into the chamber wall broke.. Sent it to the gunsmith to fix the dent in the chamber wall.. Then after a while the same pin broke again.. Then again i stood there with a dent in the chamber. FTE..
Took an angle grinder and sawed it in 3 pieces, delievered the remains in a plastic bag at my local police to get it off my "permit";)
Learned a great deal with that gun.. How firearms work internally and WHY I NEVER EVER SHOULD BUY ANYTHING JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS REALLY SHINEY!:D:D

Pistol #1 was (is) an early Colt Series 80 Combat Commander in stainless, purchased back in 1989. Due to the cost of .45 ammo, it mostly guards the safe.
I had just become aware of the truth about the Second Amendment and gun ownership, so decided to exercise my Constitutional right.
Logic said, "Get a .22," but I wanted a 1911, as close to GI as I could find. Springfield Armory's 1911-A1s were out, but I couldn't find one. I had recently read Mas Ayoob's very positive review of the Commander, and a friend at a pawn shop had a NIB on hand. 'Want' won, so the Commander went home, and it has been a winner.
I had an ambi safety installed, and an arched mainspring housing.
It is my "If I could only have one gun" gun.

I started out right with a 1911.
In the 1960s I bought a 1911 made in 1918. The military had X'd out the SN and replaced with another SN. It had been modified with bigger sights for target work, trigger work, nicely done cross hatches on the front of the frame and refinished. It shot very well. After several years, it started acting up. The slide wouldn't stay open on the last round and some infrequent feeding issues.
Well, it wasn't worth a lot back then and it was easy to replace so I did.
I do wish I had it back.

At age 16 (quite a while ago), I bought a junky looking piece that I now think was a Navy Colt or similar model from a schoolmate. It looked exactly like this one: http://www.johnnyg.westhost.com/cwg73-colt-1851-nav-s.JPG - minus the trigger guard, which wasn't brass.
When I found out it had been "decommissioned" by jamming some metal rod into the barrel, I was so disappointed I sold it again. Now wish I hadn't, of course. Pretty sure it was the real deal, and would have loved to see it restored.

The first handgun I ever fired was my mom's little .22 of unremembered manufacture. I was eight and remember hitting the can and being ecstatic about not missing. The next handgun I fired was a Browning HP that belonged to my stepdad that very same day. The next time I picked up a Browning was in the Army. The first handgun I ever owned was my TRP Operator, talk about a big step up...;)
I wish that the two pistols I first fired were still in my world, but they were stolen from my Stepdad's estate before they were catalogued. :fire:

Who told you Colt went out of business? (http://www.coltsmfg.com/cmci/home.asp)
They have cut back their civilian product line (no more double action revolvers), but AFAIK they're still making 1911/1991 pistols, Single Action Army revolvers, and AR-15 rifles.

AndyC, the reason I called for a "story" was that the CZ75 was very rare in the US back then, since Czechoslovakia was Communist. Some US troops bought them in other countries and brought them home, or they were bought in Canada. I thought maybe you had gotten yours in a similar fashion. EDIT: Well, I suppose you did. Do you still have it?
BTW, I have an early CZ75 (a "pre-B") without import marks. I presume it was a bring-back by a serviceman.

Yup, I remember reading the US firearms magazines in those days - how upset the US writers (and shooters) were that they couldn't get CZ's for political reasons; pretty much like Norincos these days, I guess.
No, I don't have it any more - that was my first of 3 or 4 over the years.

The first handgun I actually purchased for myself was a Smith & Wesson 1955Target Model 25-2 with an 8 3/8" barrel, that was chambered in the 45acp caliber. It was extremely accurate, beautifully blued, with a gorgeous set of grips. I haad been shooting my Dad's 1911 for over 15 years and the thought od shooting the same caliber I so loved in a revolver intrigued me. That intrigue was short lived and I traded it for a Model 29 with a 6" barrel. I really wish I still had that 25-2. :banghead:
