Ported 2.5" .357Mag = .38SPL +P in a non-ported?

I was looking at how much piggy bank damage something close to a Weigand treatment for an SP101 would be; and I saw that they usually do some porting..

My question then would be; does a .38SPL+P out of an un-ported come close to a .357Mag out of a ported gun?

Does the porting effect the velocity as much as the wive's tales claim?

The Weigand style LOOKS like it would reduce velocity more than, say, Taurus-style.

On a Taurus, there's a ported bit at the end of the barrel, usually about half an inch long. Basically, you lose about half an inch worth of velocity - so a 2.5" Taurus will perform like a 2" non-port. Which isn't bad, if you want the recoil control.

The Weigand type works differently. I would ask him for velocity test data, personally.

A 125gr .357 Magnum bullet is moving faster at the forcing cone than a comparable +P .38 Special load is out of a four-inch barrel.

Jacks porting suffers no more than 3-5% velocity loss when compared to a non ported gun. Shoot well

I don't care for porting on a defensive handgun. Something about the possibility of hot gases and debris being directed towards any part of my body just gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Just out of curiosity, how did you determine that? (None of the ported guns I've shot in darkness blinded me, and a 2.5" .357 is going to deafen you anyway, porting or no...)

Hi Tamara,

I've never fired a ported revolver.

I extrapolated from the fireball I got out of an unported, 2.5 inch, .357 Magnum with hot 125 grain loads (I believe they were Remington).

I assumed (You know what happens when you ASSUME!) that some of that fireball would come out of the ports, and more into the line-of-sight.

Also, I have heard others comment on this:

Well Sir My wife is a small city girl also, and trust me a 12 guage toating women she ain't,also a shotgun can be easily taken away form someone in close quarters, and there are mechanisms someone under attack has to remeber, like safeties and pumping the shotgun but I believe the 605 is a great idea, although the ported version is quite scary at night, flames actualy shoot from the barrel at two angels, any revolver nowadays are good choices, a .357 is an excellent idea also, putting .38's in a .357 tames it quite abit, especialy for a female, as far as the ported version, well I think you should rent one first , My ported rossi is nice to shoot, in the day, but at night it actualy blinds you, and the noise level is defening , especilly in like a closed room or house,One thing pple forget when it comes to home defense pistols.......... they travel threw many walls which can cause harm to innocnet neighbors, so a well expanding .38 hollow point in a .357 revolver is a great idea nezerlove also take a good look at the Ruger sp101 with a 3 inch barrel, it is much better quality than the taurus have a nice day, and stay with stainless too, they hold there value and never rust with an ocasional quick wipe down with an oily rag, If I were going to use a shotgun for home defense I'd use an auto loader 20 guage, to hell with the sound of a pump, someone is crazy enough to be in my house, they are crazy enough not to care about a crack of the slide of a pump !!!!
