Is it a useful idea to go get a used or new pistol similar to the standard service sidearm/basic training handgun to get some range time and get a small headsup over the smarter city boys during training?

if you are already familiar with firearms you are going to be several steps ahead anyways... remember basic is designed to train people with NO knowledge of firearms on how to use them...

if you want a leg up, a pistol isn't the main mark... practice with an AR-15... if you want to make sure you can actually qualify with the pistol, go to the range and rent a Beretta 92fs and go through about 250 rounds, you'll be a huge leap ahead of everyone else...

if you want the ultimate leg up on everyone else in basic, run... run and run some more... get to where you can easily do 50 push ups and run 3-5 miles with no problem... that way when week 2 hits and all your buddies are bitching about the runs, you are jogging backwards calling out cadence...

That is good advice! I recommend 100 push-ups 100 8-count body builders and a 4mile run every day.
