Well, it finally happened. My son was shooting some of my reloads this afternoon when he handed me a .303 case head. I looked at his face for powder burns/residue. None thank God.

Now I have a stuck shell in my no5 mk1 and have no idea as how to get it out.

Any sugguestions (no I don't have a broken shell extractor, nor do I know where I can get one). I tried a cleaning rod with a brush and w/o brush hoping to catch the edge of the neck, no luck.)

With out taking it into a gunsmith. Well you have to remember its brass. Brass is a light metal. So i would try to get it from the breech. you would need a pick or something else stronger and some right angle needle nose plyers. you need to try to pick a piece of it away from the walls. Just a small piece enough to grab with the plyers. Then twist it like opening a can.

303 British broken case extractors

In the mean time, if you in a hurry to remove it, a tap the right size and carefully applied can be used to pull it out

A common problem with the 303 British because of the slightly oversize chamber.
I had this happen at the Range and in a pinch I used a Paper Clip that I put a small Hook on the end that just caught the case and it pulled it out just fine.
The way to reduce this from happening is to only resize the neck of the case but then You should only fire it out of the same Rifle it was fired from.
Also check the head Space,While not really critical it can reduce this also.

Yes I got it out. Took it to a gunsmith. He took a lag bolt of proper dia. and cut the head off. He took a hacksaw and made a screw slot and threaded it into the chamber and tapped it out.

I now have 2 broken shell extractors. One homemade and 1 factory.

Yes I neck size only.

Take an oversized bronze brush, put it on the cleaning rod and jam the brush into the chamber. Then pull the broken case out.
