I noticed an asterisk by my screen name, 230RN.

I see no explanation for this on the page.

I have no new messages.

Was I a bad boy? A good boy?

I don't recall seeing that asterisk before.

What is its significance?

I'm sure it's one of those obvious things, but not to me, and I'm also sure that as soon as someone explains the obvious to me, I'll smite my forehead and exclaim, "Of course! I should have known!"

So help this old coot out, please. I don't mind looking foolish. I looked foolish once before and it wasn't so bad.

It means you've set your preferences to "invisible" mode. Nobody else (except the admin-level users) can see whether you're online or not.

Yes, I recently changed that because with the "2" in my screenname it was always on top of the list.

I was waiting for someone to come along with a screen name like 177pellet, but no luck, so I invisibilized it.

huuuh, it's only at the top of the list on your computer. it shows that you are active.

I noticed this fairly early in my tenure here, and wondered for a time why my name would show first and ever other name after it was alphabetized.

Couple of weeks of staring at it was all it took.
