View Full Version : Night-sight accessories for rifle scopes?

I'm about to buy my first accurate bolt-action rifle and I need a scope to go along with it but before deciding on what to buy I need to know one little piece of information. I'd like to one day use the scope I get for night-shoots. Does this mean that I have to buy a scope with night capabilities or can I just buy a normal scope and then buy some sort of assessory for it later? If the something extra does exists then what is it? Do normal goggles behind a scope work? Is there something mounted in front of the scope? I'm clueless.

If you are talking about night-vision equipment, no, there is nothing you can add to a normal scope to make it a night-vision scope.

There is a military night-vision attachment that mounts in front of an Aim-point or something on a Picatinny rail, but you are looking at several thousand dollars for one.

If you are talking about an illuminated reticule, somebody makes a little led attachment that shines a light in the front and is supposed to make the reticule visible.
Sounds like a gimmick to me though.

The next question is, where & what are you going to shoot in total darkness. It's illegal to hunt in many states after dark, and there aren't many ranges open then!
And if they are open, they turn the lights on.

Is BLM land away from houses where people can be bothered "open" at night? Since you mention it I should probably check.

Even on BLM land, I would prefer to see whats way out there Beyond the Target.

It's one of the primary rules of gun safety.

Be a shame to shoot someones prize bull by accident!

Military use of night-vision sights is done on controlled rifle ranges in the U.S., and on the battlefield elsewhere. They don't have the same problems with collateral damage you and I might have.

actually, with the new PVS-22s you can mount them in front of a standard scope and you are in business, supposedly they don't even need to be centered with the scope to work properly so you can use it on any sized scope. Now unfortunely I don't have any first hand experience with them, cheapo PR MP unit only gave us PVS-14s which really aren't that bad.

I did se a few of the 22s over in the sandbox with one being mounted as described as above but to be honest it was from a distance so I couldn't get a good view.

I believe they sell a civilian model of the 22 at Cabela's, booku bucks though, and with a weird mount. I do recall reading a gun mag article in which they had the scope set in a set of rings that had a rail extending foreward to facilitate the mounting of stuff above and in front of the scope, can't recall who made the rings and base though.
