I went to the range today and tried out a .40 caliber S&W 4006 that I bought a couple of weeks ago. It was used police surplus and only cost $299 at a gun shop in Smyrna, Georgia.

I am absolutely delighted with it. I fired it at the range along with my Glock 23 and a S&W M&P .40 that I rented. The heavier all steel 4006 absorbed the recoil of the .40 cartridge much better than either of the two plastic framed pistols. I couldn't discern any difference in handling between the M&P and the Glock 23, but the 4006 was definitely superior. It has enough weight to tame the recoil of the .40 cartridge, even with hot +P loads. In addition, the trigger pull was light and smooth in both single and double action.

Once people TRY the S&W classic/traditional (whatever you want to call them) series, they realize what they were missing.

Pipe down, willya?! If enough people get wind of this, the prices will start going up. :D

The 4006, as well as being the first pistol chambered for .40 S&W, is still the California Highway Patrol's issue handgun. (I am a CA native.)

And Colorado State Patrol. (some have the 4046)

My 4006 is the only .40 cal I've owned that I actually like. Got rid of the G-22, the Sigma, The P94.............

S&W 3rd gens rock!

MachIVshooter: Looks like a couple of nice 4506s on top. :)

At a gun show recently, a vendor had a 4506 for less than $400 (the slide was dinged a little, cosmetic only), and a 4566 and 4516 for under $500. Even the little 4516 is quite a little chunk of solid steel. :D I probably should have picked one up, but there were other things I wanted more. I recently "rediscovered" these "third-gens" in the form of a 3913 LadySmith.

Very underrated auto's! Excellent functioning and accuracy is much better than some auto's that seem to be current favorites .........
