What objective do you prefer?

I was wondering what type of exit lens everyone prefers on their scoped rifles.
Personally, I prefer small to middle range FOV's (15-25mm)

I consider the 40 to be medium, with everything bigger being large. I certainly consider the 30/32 to be medium and not large. In any case, I have 3-x40's and x32's on all of my rifles.

40mm minimum on my rifles for light gathering. I have a 44mm that's fantastic. Those 50s and more seem excessive, but better excessive than not enough. Game moves in the wee hours.

I think of 50mm and up to be large.

I really only think I need bigger than 40mm for varmint rifles which I will be using in early twilight.

i agree with Ash, 40mm. is at the upper edge of medium, anything bigger is "large".
I prefer somewhere in the 40 to 44 range.

40mm on 1" tubes, one can go smaller on larger diameter, say 30mm tubes. The real issue seems to me to be exit pupil diameter more than a huge objective lense. Some of the clearest scopes I've used are the straight 30mm scopes.

I guess it kind of depends upon the use. 32 or smaller for deer hunting, smaller for small game and turkey. I scoped one of my HD shotguns really small to allow for an unobstructed view and yet give me enough accuracy to cover everything to the woodline. May as well ask ''what caliber do you shoot?''

My 50+ year old tri-focused eyes need all the help they can get. I don't think I have a scope smaller than a 32MM front lens.

Although, even I gotta say that a 3-9x40 looks pretty darn goofy on a .22LR rifle...

I prefer the largest objective that will not force me to lessen the cheek-to-comb anchoring contact.
And those ridiculous Forrest Gump "see-thru" mounts that force your head up off the stock are an abomination. :barf:

36 to 45. Anything bigger is a waste and only adds unecessary weight.

I know, tell me how good the 50's are for dusk. That is what good glass is for. ;)

I used to shoot my Ruger RSI in .308 with a 20mm and a 32mm objective diameter. Just recently I switched it to a 4.75 x 40 Weaver Grand Slam and there is a huge difference in light gathering at dusk and dawn. Part of that is the fixed power has fewer len's, part of it is due to the higher quality glass, but a lot of it is due to the larger objective.

Most of my medium bore hunting rifles wear 40mm objectives, although my .458 has a 32mm, my .243 has a 42mm, and one Ruger .22 has a 50mm objective. In areas where you can hunt at night those really big objectives are very useful.

I agree that 40mm is the top of the "medium" scale. Most of my scopes are 40s, and I don't like larger objectives because they require higher mounting--at least on my rifles. I find the 40mm objective a good combination of light gathering ability and low-mount size.

Confused  -- first you ask "What objective do you prefer?" in the title, then in the first post you ask:
I was wondering what type of exit lens everyone prefers on their scoped rifles. The Objective lens is the one up front, the exit lens is the one at the rear. I like a 40-44 mm objective lens, with an exit pupil as close to 7 mm as I can get it. (obj lens diameter/power=exit pupil)

I think your definitions are a little off. 32mm certainly isn't a large objective lens. The typical hunting scope has for decades had either a 32mm or a 40mm objective lens. My own scale would be, small: under 32mm, medium: 32-44mm, large: over 44 mm. I prefer medium sized objective lenses, (based on my own definition), and lower powered scopes. I find 4x to be ideal for most hunting and 12 or 16 to be better for casual target shooting.

my mistake river dog, I get mixed up with some of the things i type some times. I meant objective lens, seems that everyone caught that though.

36mm-40mm for 3-9
40 to 42mm ish for 4-16ish
Don't like to go much over 42mm as I don't like have the scope up too high (unless the stock is made for it).

1" is 25.4mm. I've never seen a scope with a 15mm objective. 20mm is the smallest I've ever had and it worked fine.

a lot of rimfire scopes are 15mm, or at least the one I bought.
It's a tasco, but whatever

I like a 40mm to 44mm with a 30mm tube.
