Could someone provide me with step by step instructions on how I can remove the plug from my Winchester Model 12?

1. Back the magazine tube out as far as it will go. That involves turning it 90 degrees using the pin in the end as a lever and then pulling it out until it won't go any further.
2. Grasp the barrel and magazine assembly and twist it 90 degrees as if you were unscrewing the barrel from the receiver. Be sure that the operating handle is as far forward as it will go, or you could scratch the receiver.
3. There are two, tiny, opposed screws in the end of the magazine tube that retain the tube cap. That cap is the only thing between you and a very strong spring. Back the screws out one at a time. After you get the first screw out, start the second out, and cover the end of the barrel and magazine with a bath towel. When you back the second screw out, the magazine cap and spring will leave the assembly rather suddenly. You don't want them bouncing all over the room.
4. Remove the plug from the spring.
5. When you replace the spring, reverse the process except.....
Put a shotgun cleaning rod or a wooden dowel down the length of the spring, insert the rod into the tube, and then compress the spring into the tube. This will keep the spring from kinking. It also helps to have someone there to turn in the screws while you hold the cap on tight.

Good Luck!
