I'm new to reloading so excuse my ignorance. I am also not near my manual to know the name of this part.
The metal plate that holds the bottom of the casing (on rod that is pushed up toward die) holds my 30-06 bullets fine, but my 30-30 rims are too fat. I assume I must find a holding plate that fits 30-30 casings. Where do I find them. Are they pretty well universal. My Lyman Press is very old.

It sounds like you need a different shell holder for your press. Most current presses use interchangeable shell holders, however some of the older ones do not.
If the shell holder is removeable, take it to your local gun shop that carries reloading equipment and see if it looks like the shell holders that they have for sale. If so, ask for the one that fits the .30-30. If not, give Lyman a call and see if they can help you out.

Yup. Shellholder. As stated before, they are generally all going to fit the press. Not expensive at all. See http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=337893&t=11082005

Nimrod,
It is very important to use the proper shell holder for your reloading especially with rimless cases.
With rimless cases headspace becomes a factor when full length sizing.
The "rimless" shellholder covers quite a few different cartridges though.
Check your manufactures listing.

Ditto. That's what I did, back when I started. Haven't need to buy anything since, and I have handloaded probably close to a dozen different cartridges since then.
