.22 rimfire match ammo

I have noticed that most brands of match ammunition sell both a "pistol match" and a "rifle match" although some sell only a "match". I have always bought (for competition) RWS Match ammo, neither rifle or pistol on the box. This weekend at a gunshow, I bought RWS Rifle Match but did not notice the "rifle" until I got home. I shoot pistol matches mostly. I tried the Rifle Match in a pistol to see the results and I did not see any in accuracy.. It did seem to have more lubricant on it than I am used to on any .22rimfire ammo. I thought maybe there was a slightly slower burning powder for rifle but did not notice any unburnt granules in the action or in the barrel. Does anyone KNOW what the difference is?.

I think, the rifle stuff is a tick hotter. Not enough to bugger up your pistol though. With .22's you have to try a box of as many brands as you can find to see which one your pistol shoots best. My Smith 41 likes Remington Target and IVI(Canadian make) and not much else. Most other standard velocity ammo won't cycle the action.

I like that Wolf (the German stuff) Target Match .22 ammo - seems pretty darn accurate and smells sweet - Ely primed, I believe.

One never knows until they experiment. Different guns usually prefer different brands of ammunition. My Hammerli Free Pistol does better with Eley 10-X (rifle) cartridges then the same maker's pistol match. Never draw conclusions until you've tried everything that's available, and when you do find something be sure to note the lot number as well as the brand.

I've actually been running RWS Target Rifle through my Pardini, and have been very pleased with it.

in _My_ Match rifles and pistols is the Aguila "Golden Eagle" match loads = 40gr solid tip Standard velocity, their matchgrade stuff. My Hi Standard shoots the pistol load better than the rifle load, likewise my benchrest .22 rifles get tighter groups with the rifle rather than the pistol.
I've shot Ely and SKJ (German, duplicate of Wolf) rifle and pistol match/target loads and can't detect any variance in group sizes.
All of this stuff is very consistent and accurate.:)
