Hard trigger pull on Colt Series 80?

I've got a Colt Series 80 Government Model that has not been shot for some time. I had the slide out getting some gunsmithing work recently. I got the slide back and reassembled the pistol. Now the trigger pull is horrendous. It's really heavy and has a ton of creep. This gun has had an action job and previously had a nice clean, crisp trigger pull.

This makes no sense at all since nothing has been internally changed on the gun. I don't understand what could have happened to the gun from the time the slide was removed and sent in to the time it came back and was installed. The frame was simply living a quiet existence in my safe while awaiting the return of the slide. I wonder if maybe some oil or grease hardened up inside the gun since it was last used?

Did the smith put the firing pin safety back in correctly / at all when he was done with the slide?

Thats about the only thing I can think of that involves the slide and could mess up the trigger pull.

It does actually fire right??

I haven't had a chance to shoot the gun yet. The hammer will drop when you pull the trigger. Whether it will fire live ammunition or not I don't know.

Truthfully the trigger is SO bad I don't even want to shoot the gun.

Take it back to the smith.

If he only had the slide, he probably munged up the firing pin block. Learn how to take it out and be sure the right end is up.

What is the trigger pull with the slide off the gun? (Stop the hammer fall with your thumb or an object, don't let it come down and whack the frame.)

Are you sure you got the same slide back?

Jim,

I did as you suggested, and as best I can tell the trigger pull feels much better without the slide on there. I agree that something is goofy with the firing pin block. I'll look and see if I can find directions on disassembling it. If anyone has directions or knows where I can find them that would be great. Thanks.

Why are we guessing at what work was performed on the Slide ??

trbon8r it would help if you told us what work was done on this gun.

Next try the pencil and eraser trick ................ place a pencil with an eraser into the barrel of the pistol .........point the barrel at the ceiling ......... cock and pull the trigger. The pencil should be bounced off the firing pin about 3 feet.

Perform the disconnect test .......... cock the weapon and release the Slide slowly while pulling the trigger every 1/8 of movement. The trigger should not allow the hammer to drop until the Slide is all the way forward or about 1/32 of an inch shy of fully forward .

If you need further help with dissassembly ....send me a private message with your phone number and I can call you and walk you through the procedure.

JF.
