It's a coventional shoulder holster that was first developed during the 1890's The gun (usually a revolver) is retained by a horseshoe shaped flat spring that is leather covered and wraps around the topstrap and cylinder. To draw, the handle is grasp and the gun rotated out through the open end of the horseshoe spring. The muzzle of the revolver is supported in a small pocket at the bottom of the holster, and holds the gun in place while the upper part is being pulled free of the spring. There is no pouch - the back part of the holster is a flat piece of leather, with the spring attached at the top, and the muzzle pouch at the bottom. It is sometimes associated with western gunfighters, although it was developed way too late for most of them. However one lawman, named Tom Threepersons, of El Paso, Texas was known to favor the rig - but that was in the 1930's.
