I got a beautiful nib FN police shotgun at a gun show for $375. The dealer said it was a pre-ban 8 rounder, and the original $800 tag showed that. I'm thinking of adding a knoxx folder to it for $120. my question is this: should I let my dad buy it when I'm 18 so I can get a more common gun like a 590 or Saiga? Is mine much better with all the inertia-driven pumping and whatnot?

So many more questions than answers come to mind...

I would suggest you forget the folder and all the tactical thoughts and just learn to shoot is as it is, and leave it at that. The FN is a fine shotgun. It doesn't require modifications.

OK, first, I have one of them, and it's not "pre-ban" and is being made right now, and that's a typical price.
It IS a winchester 1300 shotgun that says FN on the side. It IS a fantastic shotgun, and Lee Lapin gave a great writeup on this particular model some months ago.
Now. Get this gun, and be happy in the knowledge that it's a great shotgun and will serve you well until one day you get an 870. Then this one will sit in a closet for a long time, not that you will be getting one anytime soon.
The thing you need to do with whatever shotgun you get is have someone who REALLY knows shotguns help you with the fit. I mean REALLY. Your local NRA certified instructor is probably just like mine, and knows next to nothing about shotgun fit. It's actually pretty simple: shorter buttstocks fit more people more comfortably. Your FN comes with a 13" LOP which is pretty good.
Now SHOOT UNTIL YOU ARE OUT OF MONEY.
Then work for more money, and repeat.

The reason I want the folder is that
1. I hate c-grips.
2. It makes a handier truck gun
3. I can shoot more than 2 3"mag shells before getting angry.
I love this gun though, it has not malfunctioned once- I think it and a saiga-12 will be all I ever need.
