First Handgun!

Well, I got my first handgun. A Ruger MKIII, standard model...I field stripped it and cleaned all the gunk out...what a pain in the butt! I got it back together but have two questions:

1. The manual says that I should not store the weapon cocked. Why not?

2. The manual directed me to be certain that the firing pin stop was in place (I understand the reasoning behind this and what would happen without the pin). Is it common for the pin to fall out? It seemed pretty well secured when I checked. Is this just Ruger being abundantly cautious?

As you shoot the gun over time that firing pin stop will loosen up through use, oiling etc. Just make sure to keep an eye on it when working on the gun.

Congrats on the first handgun. My first gun was a Ruger MKII ( I didn't get a rifle until a few years later). This will not be your last handgun, but it will be the most used. I still use mine, even more with ammo prices.

I leave mine cocked. I don't see any harm in it.

Most of Rugers warnings are just to cover their a$$. Not everyone that buys a Ruger is a responsible owner.

The world revolves around stupid people.

Congratulations. Keep your eye on the front sight. It won't let you down.

Hey Man,

Yeah, great gun. But that was also my Dad's first complaint when he bought his Ruger. "Well, after that adventure I think I'll only clean this once a year!" I've often heard him say. It's definitely one of those "you have hold your mouth right to get it back together" guns. Still a great shooter though, nice and heavy. Enjoy it, and save up for a silly pea-shooter 9mm like you always want. :neener: j/k. Later Bro. ~ Jeff

A wonderful gun! My Mk II was not my first, but it probably has been the one I have used more than any other. I love it. I can do things with my Mk II, that I can only dream of doing with my other pistols.

Congratulations on your first gun. My first was also a Ruger Mark III, but it was the 22/45 model.

I don't think it'll do any harm to store your firearm cocked. I do so all the time, you can't use the internal lock unless it is cocked.

Have fun. Watch out, guns are addicting. You'll be picking up another one soon.
