Does your pistol have a chrome lined bore?

December 2, 2007, 09:05 AM
I recently purchased a new Beretta 9000S(F) in .40 S&W. I am very happy with it. I note that it has a chrome lined bore. I am used to this being a standard with some AK's and have read a little about the pro's and cons of chromed lined bores. My AR does NOT have a chrome lined bore as it is standard military issue.

I was not aware that any pistols were manufactured with chrome lined bores.

What do you know about chrome lined bores? Are they durable and do they actually extend the life of the barrel?

chrome lined bores are not necessary~! :scrutiny:

They are used to extend barrel life, in fast moving bullets fired from rifles
such as the .223/5.56mm AR-15's and M-16's; plus some others~! ;)

+1 to waht ala dan said. I'd get a chrome lined bore in an AR, but for pistols I don't think it's necessary

And good morning to you

I wish my pistols all chromed chambers & bores. Some 1911s do come with that feature. Lucky you!!! Oh, chrome also facilitates extraction, resists rust, and makes cleaning easier after use. When I spoke with the good folks at Bushmaster, they told me that mostly, the chrome facilitates the round not sticking in the chamber, and protects the rifling in the first 3" to 5" of the barrel from undue erosion.

My Berettas have chrome lined bores. It is a feature that lengthens bore life, makes cleaning easier and is more resistant to pitting...all nice features to have in any firearm.

My 92FS has one.

My Taurus 24/7 also come with a chrome-lined chamber, best I can tell. No chrome-lined barrel though.

MAkarov, so yes to chrome lined barrel.

Does it help anything? Dunno.

My AR does NOT have a chrome lined bore as it is standard military issue. Then your AR isn't a Mil-Spec AR.
All military spec AR's, M-16's and M-4's have a chrome-lined bore, and always have had, except for the very first ones issued in Vietnam.

I have never heard of a chrome lined 1911 barrel being made by anyone.
Stainless-Steel Yes!
Chrome-lined, No!

In fact very few handguns have ever been made for U.S. sales with a chrome-lined bore. It is not a standard feature except for some military spec guns, and com-block guns. The Beretta is an exception because it was required in the military procurement program that selected the 92/M9 pistol for use by our armed forces. But that was a first for any U.S. military pistol having a chrome-lined bore.

Chromed bore on a stainless barrel? Nope.

Makarov pistol barrels don't come any other way.:D

None of my "serious use" guns have chrome lined bores.

They will wear less than chrome moly, plus are easier to clean. Nice to have? Sure. But I don't think they are necessary.

Chrome bores are actually kind of uncommon when you consider all the guns on the market today.

My CZs, Browning Hi-Power and USP9-full size all do, but my revolvers don't. That's just how they came from the factory, I don't think it's a necessity or anything like that, but it's sure easy to clean......I don't really have a preference either way, except in battle rifles & carbines, which is where I think chrome-lined bores really are good to have.

It is my understanding that regular pistol calibers don't push at the velocity that would require chrome lining.

"MAkarov, so yes to chrome lined barrel."

Mine is a commercial .380, do they have hard chromed barrels? Not that I care much, if 1911's don't need them it doesn't matter to me.

The poll says almost 40% have a chrome lined bore?
Come on!

Got to wonder how many folks think they have chrome lined bores, but really don't.

All that is shiny is not necessarly chrome.

The only true way to tell on many of them is touch a bluing pin to the bore and see if it turns blue or not.

If it does not, it is either a stainless steel barrel, or a carbon steel chrome lined barrel.
