Since my 9mm/45 thread went so well :P, I wanted to ask what you all knowledgeable people would recommend for self-defensive rounds in 9mm and .45 ACP (brands, type, weight, overpressure or not, etc.)? Please provide ball-park prices too. Thanks!

I too have pretty much standardized on Speer GDHP in multiple calibers including 9mm (124 gr +P) and .45 ACP (230 gr). It fires reliably and accurately in my guns and testing such as doumented at Brassfetcher (http://www.brassfetcher.com) usually shows good results.

Expect to pay about $25 or so for 50 rounds of 9mm and $30 for .45 ACP for Factory loaded. Considerably less if you buy from some place like Georgia Arms (http://www.georgia-arms.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=3192).

Personally I fire at least 200 rounds of a flavor to confirm it functions in my gun(s) before I'll carry it.

HTH, YMMV

.45 ACP I use Winchester, "Personal Defense" 230 grain, Jacketed Hollow Points. Cost? Free case from Winchester. Seriously. :)

9mm I use Winchester "Ranger" +P+ 127 grain SXT hollow points. Cost was expensive...$36.99/box of 50.

I use Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P for my 9mm SD ammo, and 230gr for 45. When I can I buy Winchester Ranger-T 230 gr.

Use any of the premium self defense ammo from the major companies and you'll be well armed. Surplus police ammo is also quite good and for the most part the standard and +P velocity is the same stuff you pay more for in 20 round commercial boxes.

I like the Winchester Ranger SXT, Federal Hiydra-shocks and Remington Golden Sabers but have a few boxes of CCI Gold Dots, Magtech "Guardian", Horandy TAP and PMC Eldarado Starfire too.
