I do. Right now it's WWB, but I prefer Federal AE.

I don't, BUT,

If I had the option to carry a 1911 while at war, (and I haven't entirely given up on the idea,) I would use FMJ. I have no real gripe with any round 9mm or bigger AS LONG AS PREMIUM JHP AMMO IS USED. When I frequently remind people that the 1911 has probably saved more soldiers' lives than any other handgun, I also remind them that most of them were using 230 gr ball ammo. Is a premium hollow-point better? Of course. But if you (for one reason or another) can't or won't use hollow-points, .45 is the best choice.

with almost 100 years of success.

The fmj 45ACP gives you stopping power AND penetration. Something that most other rounds can't claim.

I use 230gr ball in my .45 Ruger KP90. I HAVE several boxes of Golden Sabres, 180gr Federal Premium,Black Hills and others I can't recall at this moment. These rounds just take up space in my ammo cabinet. I use ball ammo exclusively.

Nice, the ball ammo is a bit cheaper.

for practice, high volume shooting and training purposes yes i use ball or fmj ammo, for carry i use various jhp rds.

It sure beats those that load up their carry weapon with exotic JHP's; but never fire any of the rds in practice due to it's high cost...
Talk about carrying a "paper-weight", if you are going to carry; make sure you do some practice with it for reliability purposes....:)

It(fmj) is all I carry and shoot in my 1911. I figure that's the way J.M. Browning intended it. I do keep some jhp around, I simply don't usually load them in my primary mag. Now in my Glock, that is a different story.

For practice I use ball. For anything else I prefer any decent h/p. That said, I wouldn't feel undergunned if I had to carry ball.

I generally have my Kimber loaded with Hydra shoks but I have been known to keep it loaded with good old hardball.

Due to price I have not shot tons of different JHPs, particularly premium ones, through my Sig 220, but I have run some Federal and Hornady hollow point ammo through it without any problems. Good JHP usually trumps FMJ, and .45 isn't a magical exception in that respect.

Ball ammo will certainly work and no one would suggest that you'd be unarmed using it but HP ammo is about 40 to 50% more effective. For me the little extra money you have to pay for a box of carry ammo is worth it. Practice with ball and load the magazine with the better JHP's when the gun's on standby duty for self defense.

I carry 230gr FMJ in the winter. Heavy winter clothing up here. Penetration is a big issue in my opinion.

"They all fall to hardball." I didn't make it up and I don't know if it's true, but I've seen it many times in similar threads.

Where you place the bullet on the target has far more influence on the result than which bullet it was. Adaquate penetration is paramount, as a well place but inadaquately penetrating round will fail as sure as a poorly placed high penetrator will.

Remember, in a fight the hands and arms go up reflexively, so you are likely going to need to penetrate more than just heavy clothes.

Good point Wally. Just more reason for me to carry FMJ.

Not to hijack the thread but don't you think that .40 S & W FMJ would be just as efficatious?

efficacious: having the power to produce a desired effect.
Ps- it took google 0.05 seconds to come up with a result. Your web browser is your friend:).
