Hi, I am new here, needed some help ID'ing ammo.

Am a total noob regarding 7.62x51 military rifles, a friend of mine has been collecting ammo for years and so headed out to his back 40 to try my PTR-91 and FN FAL which I just bought on an itch.

We were both amazed that the first round went clear through 32 inches of phones books, we never repeated that performance on subsequent shots, bullets dug out of the mass of shredded paper below.

1. LC = Lake City MO, double digits is the date code and the circle and cross is a NATO stamp

2. RA = Remington Arms Co.

3. IVI = Industries Valcartier Inc.

So far so good...

1. All of the bullets were attracted to a magnet, is this normal?

2. Is this garden variety surplus, or is this the "good stuff"?

My friend has had these for about 20-30 years and we just "busted a few caps", thought I would ask, it interests him as well.

THANKS TO THE GREAT AND EXPERIENCED GUYS ON THIS WEBSITE, appreciate all and any opinions.

Yes, it's normal for a magnet to be attracted to most military FMJ in this manner; while most Communist ammo had a mild steel core that accounted for this, most of the Western ammo had what's known as "GMCS" (gilding metal clad steel) jackets, which will also pull a magnet. The ammo you show is of good quality, but there's nothing especially out of the ordinary about it.

Thank you, I appreciate the answer from my Canadian brother, looks like some of it came from north of the 49th, eh?

Thanks again, much appreciated your help.
