S&Ws 10mm 610 is back in 4" and 6.5" versions.
They can also fire .40S&W rounds, making it more economical to shoot for those that don't reload.

I heard about it on 10mmtalk, and many are very excited because it used to be a gun that you could only buy used, if you were lucky.
What does the rel-release mean? Is 10mm gaining more steam? Or is it just nostalgia?
What do you think of the above questions and this pistol in general?

They only made 4560 no-dash 610's split between 5" and 6 1/2". They won't make any more like them, regardless of how many new models are produced.

A 45 acp and 44 magnum can do anything a 40SW and 10mm can do, especially in gun games or hunting. I've never seen the excitiment some shooters have for a 10mm other than collecting.

Me neither. I'd be more the .41 magnum type, but don't have one, yet. Heck, .357 can do anything a 10 can do, using the right loads, and is more versatile. I guess it's the moon clip thing, but heck, you can get your .357 modded for moon clips if you just HAVE to.

The ten is a fantastic round......in an autoloader. It is surpassed by .41 and .44 magnum in an N frame. I'd rather have a .44 mountain gun, myself.

It's tough to think of a caliber that isn't surpassed by something. I'm currently shooting seven calibers because, well, they're there. And, I like reloading for them. With the right loads 44mag can do anything the lesser calibers do, and a 500 can take care of the rest. Why buy anything else?

The 10mm is just as veratile as the .357 magnum. Bullet ranges go from 135 grains to 230 grains. .357 goes from 110 to 200 grains. A 200 grain bullet can be pushed slightly faster in the 10mm than in the .357 magnum.

Also, I disilke all this hate about the dreaded "lock". So S&W is evolving and surviving to sell us quality firearms. I don't see anything wrong with that. I'm not happy with the lock, but it sure wont stop me from buying another S&W (both mine have the spiderhole). It doesn't affect performance one bit.

To the above 610 naysayers;
Yes it is a moonclip thing. A long skinny cartridge will never reload as fast or reliably as a short fat one, moonclipped or otherwise although I've seen some amazingly fast reloads with the .38's. So what does it have over the 625? Flatter shooting and not much else.
It is about having enough caliber for the target without all the blast and recoil.
Why they did not build the 10mm and then the .40 around the existing .41 caliber bullet is beyond me, at least bullet selection would have been much wider.

If the lock seizes up, it will certainly affect performance, and a lot. S&W Forum has a thread devoted SOLELY to S&W revolver lock failures.

If you don't plan to use it for self-defense, I don't guess it matters.

ALL of my centerfire revolvers have at least a secondary self-defense role. I will NEVER purchase an S&W revolver with a lock.

So how does the lock cause a problem if it is not locked? I looked at the innerds of my 642 (didn't pull hammer out though) and saw no reason for the lock to fail and block firing if it not in lock mode.

I replaced the factory 18# trigger spring with a 14 lb spring and it really made the thing a sweat shooter.

A 454 or 45 colt can do anything a 45acp or 44mag can do also.Some people need a caliber for certain jobs,more power for some things and less power for others.That is where the 10mm plays a role for me,other than collecting.

I'm a recoil wimp. Full-house 44mag and 41mag to me just aren't fun to shoot, so I load them down. I've found that 10mm in full lug revolvers is fun to shoot with max loads, so it and 357 are the two calibers I can enjoy in the search for top performance.

For the none reloader, the 40 S&W has a lot more options and cost less the the 44 SPL. Moon clips are a great way to carry and speed load with.

Do not let all of the hype about the 'Lock' give any you any reason not to buy a new S&W! I have one, a .44M Mountain Gun with the IL and it has NOT repeat NOT given me any trouble. It is something new and you will hear all kind of stories, some true but most are rumors. I am not trying to get a 'flame' started, but this is my thoughts on this subject. Frankly, I am tried of hearing about it. If you don't like the lock, don't buy it, but leave the people alone that don't care.

I totally agree , that's why I haven't purchased a new S&W with the lock since they started making them. I am glad people are still buying new ones though, more vintage pre-locks for me. :D

I've never touched the lock on my S&W and it still goes boom whenever I pull the trigger.
