Return to basics!

It seems to me through reading, interactions, observation and interpretation that the general trend in gun ownership is heading back to basics. I know I am taking it back to the fundamentals. I have set my reloading room back up, bought supplies to load 30-30, am using my revolvers more, and just bought a couple of boxes of .22 to go with the pistols, lever action and bolt guns I own.

In my case it is not simply economics, or supply and demand pushing my choices. I want to go back to basics simply because that is where the root of the shooting sports is. When I get fully recovered from the abdominal surgery I had in Oct. I want to start studying black powder and will do some rifle building just to have the knowledge and ability.

Is it just me?

I agree, i find myself practicing with .22's more just to pratice fundamentals. Maybe the rediculous ammo/component prices have something to do with it

I feel the same way Grandpa Shooter. I've been buying 22s and #11 caps so i can shoot some of the cheaper to fire guns.

The black powder stuff is really fun. Get a Sam Fadala book on shooting black powder. I just bought one off of E-Bay for less than $10.00. I almost gave up on getting a BP rifle to shoot until i found his book. The patches are one of the most important parts of the load chain if you are shooting round balls. The book i have is called The Complete Black Powder Handbook.

I'm looking for a good 22 bolt action rifle with a tube feed to slow down my shooting. I may get a Marlin 881t. Tube fed bolts aren't common anymore. I don't like detachable mags.

I did the black powder thing back in the '80s. It was interesting but I never did enjoy clean-up.

I maintain proficiency with my pistols but shoot my revolvers regularly. I grew tired of chasing brass.:scrutiny: During the past ten years or so, the number of Smith revolvers in my safe has gone from one to nine. I use a Model 17 in a bullseye league. The other guys are amazed at how competitive a revolver can be!

I do shoot a Mini-14 and SOCOM 16 but my single-shot, Ruger #1s and bolt guns are used just as often. Many shooters I encounter have never SEEN a single-shot rifle and are amazed to learn that my most difficult shots and best trophy animals were taken with them. One shot -- one kill. . .what a concept!:what:

I suppose that the older you are, the more "old school" you become. Shooting since '73. . . .;)
