How hard is it to install rear pistol grips on a Mossy 590? And what would one expect to pay for said grips?

Thanks,
Jack

Do you mean a pistol grip STOCK? (as in a stock with a pistol grip)

Or just a pistol grip? (as in just a place for your hand..no option to shoulder)

See Mossberg's Web site (http://www.mossberg.com/acatalog/conversions.htm) for price - scroll down until you come to the table of stock parts & prices. The pistol grip is $24.00.

I was just looking for the grips.... Has anyone had experience in changing one out?

Thanks,

Just FYI, putting a pistol grip or stock with a pistol grip on a mossberg utterly and totally defeats the purpose of the wonderful safety location, and pistol grips are a wonderful way to turn your mossberg into a useless, inaccurate, and possibly dangerous (to the user) liability.

That is the kind of information I'm looking for as well...... pros and cons of a pistol grip....... I will take your comments into consideration!

Pistol grips only shotguns work better in Hollywood than they do in the real world. Try a search here and on TFL for a few tons of evidence on why this is a bad idea.

I issued a challenge back on TFL to the PG fans. A shootout, they pick the COF, ammo, and number of rounds. They use a PG only shotgun, I use a standard stocked 870. Results to be published rat cheer. After two ot three years and several renewals, no takers.

Also, I've knowm plenty of folks who include shotguns in their work, including Feds, Narcs, State Troopers, and bodyguards. NONE have PG only shotguns.

The 590 is a great shotgun, even though not my first choice.

Buy Ammo, Use Up, Repeat....

Pistol grips are a BAD idea on a Mossberg because of the safety location. They are also a bad idea in general. Look at how you hold a pistol grip shotgun. Where is your elbow in MOST of the positions that you would fire the gun... Hmmmm, it's just beyond the butt of the shotgun if it had a stock. The few positions where the pistol grip alone MIGHT be useful are completely outweighed by the fact that you will lose the utility of being to quickly mount the shotgun to your sholder for any kind of accuracy.

The options? A full stock with a pistol grip, A Folding stock (of which I'm not impressed with any but the Choate Top-Folding model), or a standard stock. Since I've got both, I spent some 'ninja' time with unloaded Ithaca 37s with and without the PG on them. I couldn't find a firing position where the PG would be an advantage. You also have the leverage advantage in case the Bad Guy (home invader for instance) tries to disarm you.

But I did say I had a PG shotgun, right? Why? It's lightweight and fits in the back of a Super Cub. It slings really neatly over the shoulder while I'm fishing. It can be mounted width-wise on a 4-wheeled ATV. If I wanted to look cool and make lots of noise, it's also the weapon I'd go to. It's much better than a Blackhawk when the Bear decides he likes your fish.

who uses the safety on a home defense firearm ??

If it is out of the closet the safety is off, if it is in the closet then it will be "cruiser" ready..... magazine loaded and hammer down on empty chamber so all it rakes is for you to cycle the action.

why would you wait to take the safety off in any situation that the shotgun is needed for ?

OutfieldJack:

If you are really serious about changing out the 'full-length shoulder stock" to the pistol grip format, OK... here you are.

On MOST Mossbergs (and the value-priced Mossberg line, the Maverick) the butt plate is held on by 2 screws...usually Phillips head. Remove lower and loosen upper butt plate screw, swing butt plate out of the way. Then you can get to the stock mounting bolt. Most often, a 1/2" socket fits that bolt, but be aware that SOME used a big flat-head or slotted-screw arrangement. After you remove that bolt or screw, the stock comes off. The pistol grip kit that you can obtain direct from Mossberg contains a new stock attachment bolt.

The Pistol Grip kit is $24 direct from Mossberg. Fits the 500, 590 & Maverick 88 models. Part # 95000

Thanks for the info.... sounds pretty easy, although I'm not sure if I'll do it. I guess for $25 its not much of an investment to see if I like it. I appreciate all of the comments and suggestions.

I use the Butler Creek pistol grip with folding stock. One problem with pistol grips on the M590, however, is that they typically cover the rear of the trigger assembly behind the trigger guard. As a result, the grip must be removed to pivot the assembly out of the receiver when disassembling the weapon for cleaning. Oh, and I'd definitely recommend against any stock set made by Advanced Technologies Inc.

Jack, if you want to shoot a pistol grip only 590, i'm sure i have a spare pistol grip laying around from my 500. Let me know if you're interested.
