Ok School me.

I have plenty of smokeless powder rifles, handguns and shotguns. I have been contemplating a black powder gun for a while. i have seen some pretty good ones at the range. Now not knowing much and i mean not knowing much about black powder guns. i saw this rifle at cabelas. IT looks really good. The reviews are pretty good. So i have some questions. i was going through the order process tonight and it never asked me about a ffl. Then i was thinking do black powder rifles need to be shipped to a license ffl. Then paperwork filled out and everything or is a straight purchase. Then can the experts at be tell me about this rifle for a first time purchase.

So far the feds have pretty much left us alone so there is no need of a ffl or paperwork, its just a straight purchase. That fact alone has attracted a lot of new people to muzzleloading.
That CVA buckhorn does look like an inexpensive way to get a taste of muzzleloading. If you don't like it you aren't out much but if you do get bit by the bug there is a whole nother world out there to explore and you don't have to go through a bunch of federal red tape to explore it.

Under federal law black powder rifles (and pistols, revolvers and shotguns) are not considered firearms under the GCA and can be shipped directly from the retailer to a buyer; no FFL participation is required.

However, there may be limitations imposed by state law. The shippers can usually tell you what your state law requires, as can your local authorities.

That is a really good rifle. It shoots just as well as any muzzleloader out there. i have shot a lot of them. Try 100 grains of Pyrodex RS and a 240 grain Hornady SST bullet.

From my rather limited experience, if it's a CVA (Connecticut Valley Arms) buy it with confidence. I have one set up in .45 and it has tack driving accuracy. Mine isn't the Buckhorn Model, but still...That CVA will do it's part, the rest of it just depend's on you doing your part...Okay...
