The 2004 elections are winding up, with political parties and their candidates on fundraising sweeps everywhere.

Write a compelling radio ad that you believe would get & hold the attention of commuters, not more than 60 seconds in length.

Here's mine:

I am a woman in America.
In a world of ever increasing demands on my time, some things are more important to me than others.
My family, my home, those I choose to love; nothing else matters more.
When the Cold War raged, and Civil Defense sirens turned my blood to ice, I could only think of the basics, and pray that it would be just another drill.
When the Berlin Wall fell, I thought "The insanity is over!"
And then new reports came in; the war was here.
The real war had been here all along.
On the highways, in schools, businesses; churches and hospitals.
I knew about the war on drugs, the sweeping tide of teen alcohol abuse.
I knew about the liberal left and the conservative right.
I knew about racism, bigotry, and homophobia.
I read the reports of Waco and Ruby Ridge.
It's all on the news.
About the time that the reports from the Oklahoma City bombing came in;
and then the horrifying news of kids shooting kids - - I discovered the Internet.
And I started taking the time to try and learn more about the world around me.
I found the lists of the body counts.
Gays, lesbians, and transgendered people are being murdered with inhuman savagery every day.
Blacks, Asians, and Hispanics are seeing levels of brutality, blatant racism, and murder only equaled by archive reports from a time when I was learning to walk.
Churches are being desecrated, even to being burned to the ground.
I had found an iceberg.
What I had accepted; what I had been told was that new laws would stop this madness.
And then I thought for my family, those I love, my home.
And I read the Declaration of Independence.
Politicians, and the news, and the popular magazines seem to be saying that it's alright to be afraid; all we need are more laws.
And I read that document again.
So I started reading history, with an eye to comparing times past to the Los Angeles Times, to Newsweek, to PBS.
And I learned we've been lied to.
When alcohol was outlawed, alcoholism and illegal smuggling became big business; just like drugs today.
When guns were outlawed, millions died without being able to do anything else - but die.
When laws are passed to "Do something about crime" and the jails are overflowing already with repeat felons; the judges only end up able to moderate the criminal conflict, and the street cop fights to keep from snapping under the pressure.
The GLBT community wants to pass "Hate Crimes Laws", so that the Federal Government can step in, should they feel some local court isn't addressing a crime of violence vigorously enough.
And the Brady Law is supposed to make it impossible for criminals to buy guns.
I found the real war.
The one going on since 1968.
The one with funding to overwhelm some third-world countries' national budgets.
Planned campaigns of attack; of ambush; of terror, and frightening propaganda.
And it's aimed against us:
You see, there haven't been tens of thousands of convictions handed down to the criminals who freely committed a felony by falsifying ATF registration documents when they tried to buy a gun through a gun store - because the FBI hasn't arrested them yet.
And the numbers of our congressmen - and women who rant against guns, while endorsing more government funding for healthcare, maternity leave, AIDS outreach and family planning - so many of them are making us make what seem to be impossible choices.
The war.
It's a simple one.
Read the Declaration of Independence.
We are the women of America.
Without the basics, we have little to give meaning to our lives.
We shelter and nurture and cherish life.
In this war of sound-bytes and garish headlines, know for all times, and with our last strength that we will keep the true right to protect and defend our selves, our homes, and those we choose to love from the mayhem of the predator without hesitation or inhibition.
And as no law gives pause to the predator, when faced with no other option and in fear of my life, I will reach for a gun.
My gun.
I am a capable and competent Citizen of America.
I demand that you career politicians hear me, and heed my clear demand for a swift bi-partisan resolution affirming the inherent truth of the Second Amendment: That all free peoples; all citizens of America shall have the unconstrained eternal right to keep and bear arms, and are entrusted to use such arms in swift and competent hands at need in defense of self, family, home and country.
You see, without the basics, we can't begin to have a worthy Country, or a gracious society.
Not even a village.

C'mon - write a radio ad you'd love to hear! There are dazzling minds here! Contribute to the political process!

All we have to do is come up with a page or two and maybe we'll see a version of "build it and they will come!"

Wow!

That's not a 60-second commercial, that's a manifesto.

It's also 3 to 5 times longer than what you're looking for, at 799 words.

Wow Trisha, nice bit of work there; I wouldn't call it a manifesto, but it's nicely done.

See now unfortunately you've set a pretty high bar.

Speaking strictly as a marketing and advertising guy: it's way too long for a 60-second spot. It's good, but there's just too much of it to reach anyone.

Suggestions:

1. Start with a catchy slogan or headline. Present evidence. Conclude by reiterating the slogan or headline.

2. Tell a story, such as: "Like a lot of people, I used to be skeptical of guns, until the day I..."

3. Ask a rhetorical question, such as: "Do you think children are important?"

4. Tell a joke. Very few advertisers have sense enough to do this, but leading with a humorous remark is a tried and true sales technique.

You're on a good path. Pursue it, please.

People, I'm interested in seeing what THR could come up with - not me! I'm up to my nose trying to get my book written (97pgs the last 6 days).

Go for it - create some ad copy that'll set people thinking!
