My wife was with me in a gun shop a couple weeks ago and encouraged me to buy a S&W M-10 (1969 4" tapered bbl) that I was admiring. I later found out she allowed it because she had just spent several hundred dollars on herself. Whatever, I have a new toy.
I made a batch of 158 gr LRN on top of 4.3 gr of Unique and we went to the range. She asked to try it and did very well. She likes the way it fits her hand. (That surprised me. It's just wearing the original wood grips. and she didn't like my SP-101 shooting the same round.)
But, she'd like a round that doesn't kick as much.
I've got a bunch of Speer 148 gr lead double-ended wadcutters. Can you guys suggest a load or two using Unique, Clays, or 231?

If it will reliably meter out of your powder measure, 2.5gr Clays is a very soft load for the 148 WC.

Try 2.8 or 3.0 of 231.

For best accuracy on my police 25 yard range with that bullet made with tire weights I recommended 3.1 grains of WW231 and I sold many Star reloaders set up with that charge.

I have loaded 2.6 Clays for the 148DEWC and it worked great. Very light and very accurate, with a soft bullet there is no leading either.

FWIW, 2.7gr of Bullseye has been the established accuracy champ for years and 2.5gr of 700X is what I have used for a target load for at least the last 25 years and it has served me well accumulating a medal or 2. Quantrill

I just loaded up some 38 Spl 148 gr DEWC on top of 2.5 gr Clays. My OAL is 1.205" which means the crimp is just about curled over the face of the bullet. Those bullets have a long way to travel just to reach the cylinder gap. I'm used to seeing the meplat almost flush with the cylinder. My wife and I will be trying them out Saturday morning with my new (used, 1969 vintage) S&W M-10.

The 148 gr DEWC, 2.5 gr Clays, CCI 500 primers, Winchester brass, and 3/4 turn Lee Factory Crimp shot very cleanly and accurately. Chris really liked it and has claimed the gun as hers.
But she feels the top of the grip doesn't fill her hand enough and the checkering rubbed her fingers raw after 75 rounds. It's a square butt S&W M-10.
Do you have any suggestions for a fuller, smooth wood grip?
