I am going to visit my son at Whiteman Air Force Base near KC next week and we would like to go shoot. Can anyone tell me of any good indoor ranges to go. I would also like to shop for good used handguns. Are there any gun shops in the area with a huge selection?

Thanks

The only indoor shooting range I know of in the area is at The Bullet Hole. http://www.thebullethole.com/portal/

They also have a nice selection of guns. Also worth a stop are:
The Olathe Gun Shop: http://www.olathegunshop.com/

Cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/community/aboutus/retail-detail.jsp?detailedInformationURL=/cabelas/en/content/community/aboutus/retail/retail_stores/kc/kc.html&cm_re=home120607*right*retail_dropdown

I doubt you'll find any deals on handguns that after adding in shipping and FFL transfer fees will be better than you can do at home.

Some more info on local gunshops over at : http://www.ksccw.com/site/showthread.php?t=4544

Wuchak, I used to shoot at an indoor range by that name over in Shawnee Mission about 30 yrs ago. It was about the only game in town back then, and while I'd be but mildly surprised to learn that that was still the case (given the liability/insurance/zoning climate these days), I'm gratified to think that it might still be around. Back then, its biggest drawback was the limited number of lanes which made for a long wait at times.

A quick Google or Yahoo! Yellow Pages search might turn up something else in the Metro KC area, especially now that MO has finally allowed CCW permits for citizens. One can hope.

Another great place to shoot:

Crossfire Recreational Center
21200 E. Truman
Independence, MO 64056.
Phone: 816-796-0023

It's about $8.50 / hour to shoot - no membership required. They're closed on Mondays. I shoot there often.

They share the building with a gun store:

Arms Mart
21200 E. Truman Rd
Independence, MO 64056
816-796-5800

The store is open Mon - Sat.

Cabelas would have the biggest selection, but charge a $30 transfer fee on top of pretty much retail prices. Cabelas does have a "Gun Library" where they sell antique and unique firearms. They have some interesting things there.

Cabelas would be on the other side of KC (coming from Whiteman), but would be worth the trip if you've never been to one.

Showmeshooters (http://www.showmeshooters.com/) is in Claycomo just north of World's of Fun amusement park. Very nice, clean range.

You might also get in contact with Sedalia Rod & Gun Club
Rr 1, Sedalia, MO 65301, (660) 827-0529 - they are much closer to Whiteman than KC.

Otherwise, Crossfire is probably the closest that I know of to Whiteman and it's probably close to an hour drive.

Have fun!

I grew up in Kansas City and as far as I know it is still there. It was originally built as a retail outlet and shooting range owned by Hodgdon Powder Co. They haven't owned it for many years. The Bullet Hole was the first PUBLIC indoor shooting range in the US.

I just joined the Bullet Hole last week. Nice facility, looking forward to spending a lot of time there this winter. It would be my recommendation.

I shot at ShowmeShooters in Claycomo, MO just north of KC and south of Liberty, MO

I like it as a range, I would not recommend buying a gun there however...Little overpriced and not real big on bargaining, at least not with me :-)

Great Guns in Kearney, MO has the best gun prices on the west side of MO as far as I know of. They will treat you right, less used guns in the cabinets maybe then other stores, but only because people buy them up when they are priced so good.

bebop, you might peruse the MO Dept of Conservation site linked, make a phone call to them and see what they have lined up in way of outdoor shooting sport activites during the time of your visit. On the left hand column you'll find their "Shooting Ranges" link under "Related Topics".

MDC has "Excellent" programs statewide and a gift of membership for your son will at least get him their magazine "Missouri Conservationist" while he's stationed at Whiteman AFB.

It's a little more of a drive, but Total Range in St. Joseph is a great place to shoot, has the only indoor combat range in the area, and the guy that runs the place is a huge supporter of gun owners rights in our area (Hi Bill).

Mainmech48,

It's the same place, right next door to Hodgen's corporate headquarters. You don't need to be a member to shoot there but if you join, $20 annually, you get $1 off each visit. I think the prices are $9 for non-members, $8 for members. My understanding is that it's a per day price, not per hour.
