I just got another rifle M77 Ruger heavy barrel from my uncle:evil: anyway, I've never loaded this caliber before and would really appreciate everyone's advice and opinions on bullet, powder, etc. I bought ww brass and lee dies yesterday. I'll be shooting jack rabbits, skunks, coyotes, pigeons, and soforth. I don't see rate of twist on the barrel.

It has a 14" twist, as do nearly all .22 centerfires designed before the Army started messing with them. My 77 V gets mostly 52 gr SMK and 50 gr Remington Powrlokt. I think I'd use one of the tougher 55 gr bullets for coyotes, even though they are not as accurate in my rifle.

My 77 V is accurate with Win 760 powder. It also does well with IMR4895. A friend swears by IMR4350 and although it is kind of slow burning for .22-250, he gets excellent accuracy at the cost of a little velocity.

Using 50 to 55 grain bullets, I like 760 and Varget but my favorite is H380.

55gr V-max over Varget worked very well for my Savage 22-250. At 100yds it split jack rabbits darn near in half.

IMR4895 or H380, you can't go wong. Sierra 52 gr BTHP were my 700's ticket.

Thanks for the info everyone. Obviously the V-max, Blitz Kings etc. blow animals to bits. Would a Sierra 52 gr BTHP do less damage for when I want to make use of the animal? Or do I need to go to a FMJ? Does it matter what kind of primers?

I think that for your uses, the 50gr bullets will work well. They are generally more accurate in the 1/14" twists.

I like the Midway "Dogtown" bullets. I run them over 35.5gr of RL-15, 36.0gr of Varget, or 40gr of H380. Velocity runs from 3,590 to 3,720fps. Accuracy is 1/2" or so.

This is from a Standard wt. Rem. M700. YMMV.

I also like the 50gr Remington PLHP, and of course, the Sierra 50 and 55gr flat-base and boat-tails. Less expensive, but less accurate are the Remington and Winchester bulk packed 55gr Soft Points. Either will give you ~1.0 groups at 100yds.

If you decide to try your .22-250 on deer, use a 55gr or heavier bullet. Performance isn't much different than the .243wcf. I especially like the 63gr Sierra semi-ptd. I've never lost a deer with it, nor recovered a bullet. I can't say the same for the .243 and 100gr bullets.
