MD500E December 10, 2007, 04:34 PM Hi
I'm looking at getting the barrel on my new Steyr Scout .308 threaded for a supressor. These barrels are a bit on the thin / low profile / light side though aren't they?
As I don't have the rifle to hand yet could any Steyr Scout owners please let me know the outside diameter of the barrel at the muzzle.
I'd like to thread it 5/8 UNF or M14 but suspect I may have to settle for 1/2 x 28 UNEF. Which dosn't leave much on a .308!
Cheers

highorder December 10, 2007, 04:44 PM you should go with a a fast attach muzzle device like what Surefire has to offer. then you will have more to work with.
MD500E December 10, 2007, 04:58 PM I believe the Surefire system mounts on a MilSpec flashider. That would mean threading the muzzle of the .308 Scout 1/2 x 28 UNEF which is a bit on the small side in my opinion. I want to go with the largest thread I can hence my need for the OD at the muzzle.
For those interested my Bushmaster M4 is threaded 1/2 x 28, my Tikka Super Varmint 5/8 UNF and my Remington 700 3/4 x 24.
If there is enough meat for a 5/8 UNF thread then thats what i'd like to go for.
Molasses December 10, 2007, 05:34 PM could any Steyr Scout owners please let me know the outside diameter of the barrel at the muzzle
Mine reads about .522"

Thank you for taking the time out to measure it for me. I appreciate it.
1/2 x 28 UNEF it is then I guess !

waterhouse December 10, 2007, 06:25 PM As confirmation to the above reading, mine comes out to .521"
I don't know if it will help, but I believe they also make a Tactical version of the scout, one version of which had a threaded barrel, so you might want to look into that to at least see what they did.
MD500E December 10, 2007, 06:36 PM Thanks Waterhouse.
A local dealer has a factory threaded tactical scout in stock so I'll go and have a look.
mcmjr December 10, 2007, 06:48 PM The steyr scout barrel is too thin to put a can on. Just call AAC and ask them. You can barely thread a 1/2" thread pattern on that barrel and then you're going to put a pound of metal on that thin fluted barrel? No way, even if you can shoulder a silencer on the barrel, your accuracy is going to get all screwed up. The barrel is way too thin. If you havent bought the gun go with the tactical version with the heavy barrel, if you already bought the gun, your sort of SOL.
highorder December 10, 2007, 07:40 PM there is plenty of metal for a 1/2-28 thread. the major diameter is .500 (+/- a few thousandths) for thread class.
FWIW, I would shorten the bbl if I was going to add a can.
mcmjr December 10, 2007, 08:17 PM Yes you can put threads on the barrel, but do you think .022" left is enough to shoulder a silencer? you have only .011" left of metal for a long hunk of metal to shoulder to the barrel. You cant cut down the barrel since the steyr's barrel is fluted.
trstafford December 10, 2007, 10:50 PM did you do a web search to see if you can contact the factory and ask them?
MD500E December 11, 2007, 11:01 AM Further to my last: The Scout I looked at today was threaded 1/2 x 28 UNEF and fitted with a P.E.S over barrel supressor.. This gives two points of support: one at the muzzle via the threaded section and another via a secondary bushing 7" from the muzzle.
Furthermore it was proofed at the London proof house with proof load and I am reliably informed it will shoot well under 1 MOA with this supressor.
mcmjr. I hear what you are saying and would not consider a conventional can on the Steyr Scout. The barrel harmonics would not be good methinks.
Thanks for your opinions everyone I'll let you know what I decide to do and when I get more computer savvy maybe post some pictures.

Apparently it can be done. Good luck with the project, let us know how it turns out.
mcmjr December 11, 2007, 07:22 PM Waterhouse, what kind if sound suppressor is that? MD500E, I never thought about an overbarrel suppressor, but that would make sense. My only concern would be that the barrel wouldnt be free floating at that point. Is there a reason why you want to buy a steyr scout? I would get the ssg myself.
MD500E December 11, 2007, 07:35 PM Hi mcmjr
I got the Steyr Scout as I can't resist a good deal! And believe me this was a great deal.
Incidentally and funny you should mention it... my first .308 centrefire rifle was an SSG69 with a Kahles ZF84.
My current .308 is a custom one by this company http://www.armalon.com to this spec
ARMALON PR built on a Remington 700 Action. Takes M14 detatchable box magazines, fluted and threaded 1 in 10 twist hammer forged barrel ,muzzlebreak, Jewell trigger, tactical bolt conversion, mirage band, 20 MOA M1913 base with a Leupold Mk4 scope in ARMS rings. Shoots 0.7 MOA.
But too heavy for the woods and it would scare the hell out the locals!
Hence purchase of the Scout.
