My local supplier is out of large pistol primers. I've been loading 5.8 gr. of Win 231 with CCI Large Pistol and 200 gr. LRN. I remember reading that folks drop the charge a bit and use magnum primers (I have some Winchester) in some calibers. Anyone have experience with magnum primers in this caliber?

I have been using the winchester WLP (magnum or standard) for some time, I use the same loads as when I used federals and have had no problems. All the bullseye/ camp perry guys do the same, I have not heard than anyone changed their powder charge.

I think with a short/fat case .. and thus no long column of powder .... ignition will not change much .... perhaps just a smidge of extra pressure from primer alone but .... marginal.

No real change. I have done this and did not see any diffrence in my loads.

I would suggest that if you change anything, start over with the starting charge weight of powder and watch for signs of high pressure.

A friend of mine swears by them using Unique but the only time I found them necessary was with AA No. 5. Win. WLP's left so much unburned powder that the gun jammed after just a few rounds. Switching to CCI magnun primers and a taper crimp fixed that. But then so did switching to a faster and cleaner powder. With 231 I don't think it'll make much if any difference.

When I bought my Star Universal loader they recommend Winchester primers for feeding through the priming system. That was in 1978. Somewhere along the way (don't remember when) Winchester went to their "Magnum or Standard" version. I didn't change anything and have never had a problem. I used Red Dot, Unique, Bullseye, 231 and Universal Clays. I can't guess how many rounds I have loaded but I have two 45s that have digested well over 10,000 rounds each.

I'm a bit short on background here, so a question is in order. I gather that Winchester labels their new pistol primers as either magnum, or standard primers.

I use CCI200 large rifle primers beause the pistol primers will pierce at such high pressures for:
1) 45acp in my 1903 Turk action with loads beyond 460 Rowland
2) 45Colt in my Steven OEM .410 with loads beyond 454 Casull
3) 45 apc in my Patriot pistol with loads beyond 460 Rowland

I use WLP because the pistol primers don't pierce:
1) 45acp in my Para Ord P10 at loads beyond 45 Super
2) 44 mag in my Model 29-4 at max 44 mag book loads
3) 10mm in my G20 Barsto barrel at loads to the limit of brass w/ that case support
