Anyone feel like debating a rabid anti-gunner?

"karl L" wages daily war in the comments section of auburnpub.com, my local newspaper website. He is highly opinionated and a classic anti. He has been ranting and shouting-down people all day on guns because someone dared write in to the opinion section about how we need more Bernie Goetzes and Joe Horns in Auburn.

I realized a long time ago attempting to reason with anti-Second Amendment bigots is like trying to teach cats to whistle, with the difference, of course, that cats are warm and furry and of some value.

Nothing can really be added to Standing Wolf's reply. But I'm crass, so I'll add anyway.
Can you imagine trying to reason with the likes of Carolyn McCarthy,Chuck Schumer,Sarah Brady,Josh Sugarman or our 'own' Vector I ?
It's an exercise in futility. These people cannot be reached,
Save your energy on those that can.

After reading his comments, I'd rather go drink draino than try to reason with someone like that. It's one thing when an anti refuses to look at actual facts, it's another when they make up their own to support their warped views.

Um.....
Who says we're trying to convince karl L? Or Sarah, or Josh, or Paul, or Chuck?
I argue with these nitwits because other people read this stuff.
I don't say it because I think I have a chance of convincing anyone other than the lurker.
I've said before that there are three sides in this argument:
-the pro-RKBA crowd,
-the sliver of a percentage of statists who want a total ban,
-and the vast majority of the population who has simply never thought about it.
I'm after the third group when I post.

Debating with a tree would be a more productive use of time.

Why do you bother to read the colum if you don't like the subject and now you ask us to repond to it?

Beatnik makes a good point. Everyone here spends their time convincing everyone else here that we all agree on the same issue. But of course everyone here knows that or they wouldn't be here.
Convincing the masses that we're right is what needs to be done. The anti-gunners have the argument that they're right because they say they're right. It is circular logic and doesn't hold up to scrutiny. We need to be the voice of reason.

I would rather try to shove my head through a brick wall than argue with some smarmie ass who thinks he knows everything and because I think something different I am automatically wrong...

True enough JL. It's much easier to find a smarmy ass on THR who thinks he knows everything who is automatically right because he agrees with you.

I wont argue, because I don't have the intellect that makes elitests listen... However, if anyone were to debate an anti-gunner, I would nominate that someone to be Geekwitha45.
I've seen his reponses to some anti-statements, and read some of his site... I sure wish I could talk like that!

I agree - we cannot let the screeching minority win by default through our silence.
I have changed my own opinions on a number of subjects after watching informed debates (without being personally involved) online and elsewhere - not because I'm indecisive but simply because I haven't seen all the angles myself (America is a very complex society to a foreigner).

Exactly what I was looking for too. I don't have any illusions about turning someone from the dark side. But I'll be d****d if I let the anti-gunners run a one-sided debate in a public forum. Especially one that is likely to be viewed by tons of fence-sitters.

Everyday Citizens do NOT have a "right' to own an instrument of war. I like Army tanks. Why can't I own one and drive it around?
You can.

You can also buy a number of Naval Vessels for private use.
And wheeled Armored vehicles can be made street legal.
If you want to buy a Mig 17 I might be able to hook you up.

Why would anyone bother, unless they were a strictly new convert?
This is like wrestling a pig in mud; you both get dirty, and only the pig really enjoys it.

Stick to facts.
300 millions firearms in the US and no mass carnage. Firearms are everywhere.
CCW holders are the most law-abiding segment of society.
3,000 criminals are lawfully shot and killed every year by firearm owners. 17,000 are lawfully shot and wounded by firearm owners every year. This is five times as many as police.
Any anti-SA can be defeated with facts.
There are 2,000,000 defensive uses of firearms per year in the US.

The only reason to respond to an idiot like this is to give the uninformed masses a counterpoint, instead of a one-sided pack of lies. But I'll that up to someone else.

Back in the '60s we visited friends living here in Florida. We were vacationing from Indiana. Knowing my great interest in gun collecting, the husband explained I should avoid any gun discussions as his wife was VERY anti-gun. We did not talk guns in any way.
About 10 years later, we were living in beautiful surroundings up in British Columbia and our Florida friends were enthralled enough with it to move there. One of their children was not with them!
We asked about their only son. Story was, years earlier he had gone fishing with some friends early one morning. He fell asleep on the way to the river where they were going to fish. The other guys all got out of the car and went down to the riverbank, leaving him asleep in the car.
He evidently awoke later, got out of the car and discovered a shotgun in the back seat. He must have been curious and pulled it out of the car BARREL FIRST!
The boys on the riverbank heard the shot. When they got back to the car he was laying beside it, nearly blown in half by the 12ga. He lived just long enough for them to get him to the hospital where he died from his massive wound.
The husband felt guilt for not going against his wife's wishes and teaching their kids gun safety. His wife felt guilt for not allowing her only son to learn gun safety SOMEHOW, before it was too late.
We learn by doing! Best regards, ~ ~ ~ 45Broomhandle

That's why you don't try to reason with them.
You logically refute their arguments for the SPECTATORS.
What you do with the anti-gunners is EMBARASS and HUMILIATE them.
Use their own words against them. Save what they say for future reference. This is a devastating tactic against them.
Highlight their contradictions and hypocrisy.
If they're self-described liberals, pounce on ANY illiberal statements, especially racist, anti-Semitic or homophobic statements, they make.
I've been doing this since 1986 and it's HIGHLY effective.

I may try again, but....I haven't even written my local POSTED mall yet! Priorities and all....
