He picked up a shotgun a few days ago and we went to shoot it. I first noticed that it looked nice, good condition of the blueing and the wood and everything seemd so smooth and well fit. Then I saw it was a Winchester, and told him he could find the year by using the internet. He'd already done that and said it was 1954. It's a semi-auto with a 2-shell magazine tube. Not sure what it is, anyone know?

Also what's it worth? He paid $225.

P.S.

I didn't eject (ejector seemed to be just missing?), and the feed-ramp had to be moved by hand. But the store told him it was working and he had time to return it, though they should probably fix it I expect.

The Model 50 was introduced in 1954. There was also a Model 50 Featherweight, but I can't recall if it was introduced the same year. Nices ones are probably worth $300 to $500 around here.

My Dad had a model 50 12g when I was growing up and we "slapped a lot of ducks" with hit. I picked up one like it a few years ago and have shot it quite a bit. I don't recall ever having a malfunction with one.

The ejector was physically missing from the bolt, just an empty hole beside the firing pin:eek: I was basically wondering if it had prospects for fixing and keeping, but though it seems if it were 100% working it would be a good deal, probably not a huge upside potential (except for a few decades later), so not worth buying except to keep and hold for grandkids. I'll tell my friend to return it and get one of these:

When e-bay was still selling gun parts a Model 50 ejector cost $12 plus shipping. Try gunbroker, gunsamerica or one of the other auction sites. The sellers have gone somewhere. I don't know if NuLine, Bob's, Numrich or one of the parts dealers have any in stock.

Thanks, I know winchester had a great parts service (lost the sight bit off my
1894). But it's my buddy's first gun so it's really probably better to get something he's 100% confident in from the get-go. Plus he didn't realize it was only a 3-round magazine.

That's a pretty cool gun--I've only had my hands on one once, but I know aaaaall about the guy who designed its mechanism, since my grandfather's friend literally wrote the book on this fellow. "Floating chamber," I believe it's called, and allows it to fire high and low brass interchangeably; other arms employing this mechanism were the Remington 11-48, the Remington 550 (allowing it to fire shorts, longs, and LRs interchangeably), and the Colt Service Ace. (It was tuned so that its .22 ammunition made it kick like a .45.)

No, the 11-48 used a simplified long-recoil type action derived from the Browning Auto-5. The entire barrel moves back into the receiver when the gun cycles, not just the chamber like the Winchester M50.
