My experience with shotgun slugs is almost in the "None" category so I'd like to tap into the experience of those who have used them a bunch.

Main question is about the accuracy and point-of-aim consistancy between brands. How many of you can "mix-'n-match" brands of slugs in your gun and still have shots landing where your sights say they will ? Has anyone outh there had big problems in this respect ?

My slug experience has been fairly limited. I have a Mossy 500 20 ga. with a smoothbore barrel. Most people will tell you that slug guns are more finicky than rifles and typically can shoot really well with one brand, but terribly with another. The best thing to do is buy a few boxes of a bunch of different types and then see which one works best out of your gun.

Point of impact will vary even between the SAME brand with different lots of slugs..

I recently tested a bunch of slugs in my Mossberg 930, most slugs of similar weight and velocity from different manufacturers stayed within a 12" circle of each other (at 100 yrds) and the individual slugs grouped fairly well within the same box of ammo. I also tried some Hornady SST slugs these also grouped very well but were an additional 8" higher that the rest of the groups, this is probably due to the fact that the Hornady was by far the fastest and the lightest of the slugs that I shot.

What did I learn from that day at the range.... get the ammo you plan to hunt with and zero it in so that you'll have 1 less thing to think about on your hunt...

BTW, it didn't matter this season anyway, I only saw 2 deer the entire season on opening day, both small does...never took a shot. Froze my butt off the rest of the time...

Experimentation is really the only way to validate point of impact with slugs. You have to test your particular weapon with various brands of slugs. If you find a brand that hits close to point of aim, go back and buy a bunch of them, making sure they have the same lot number (usually located inside the box flaps on the ends of the box).

If you can get both the slugs and buckshot to impact close to point of aim at 25 yards, IMO your testing is done :). Very seldom does this happen, but can.
