Ok i cast a lot of bullets for my regular rifles and handguns. I have been doing my research and am thinking of ordering a lee R.E.A.L Muzzle loading mold in 50 cal. http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1197521566.3727=/html/catalog/blackpow.html part number 90394.

Question Who here cast there own. What are the reviews on casting. Has anyone used this mold.

Hey Scrat, I cast REAL bullets in .45. They are pretty accurate in my rifle with a 1-48 twist. I would have to say that they shoot just as accurate or maybe more than patched round balls. They are also easy to cast too, just follow the instructions that comes with the mold and you should be set. It will probably take a couple of pours before you get going well. Also, if your bullets start to have a frosted look, your mold is getting too hot.

I've used both the 50 and 58 cal. real molds and they work well in my guns and it is an easy round to get right. I've been told that if you add about 1% tin to the lead it will pour better and not harden the bullet too much

With the REALs, do you use pure lead or a harder alloy?

Everything i have read so far and everyone is telling me to stick with pure lead dont use anything harder. As you still want the bullet to seal around the barrel when fired.

Scrat and Armedbear, I've always used 100% lead but I was advised on this forum to try using an alloy of lead and about 1% tin. The advantage as advised is vague but was told that it would improve the casting properties of the lead but not effect the softness. I've yet to try it.

I use 30:1 for most work.

It casts a bit nicer and adds nothing to the hardness. I use a very high setting on the Lee pot to get it to cast consistently.

I shoot a 370 grain Maxi-Ball in my .50 cal T/C Hawkin and I cast them from pure lead with no problems.
My load is 90 grs. of FFG and I have taken an even dozen deer with it.
Eleven dropped in their tracks, the twelth went 20 yards.
The rifle itself is very accurate shooting cloverleafs at 50 yds./bench.
