Does the slug have any practical application for military/battlefield use?

I can see several situations where slugs would have been useful, but in over 25 years of toting military shotguns, I have never been issued slugs, or fired any oficially from a military shotgun.
Others may have, I have not.

Possibly. But any place and situation where a slug in a shotgun is a better idea than buck is also a place and situation where a rifle's a better idea from the get go.

One very specialized application of slugs is for blowing off door hinges as a part of an entry team. I believe the Israelis developed this technique.

Of course, if you have a shotgun at that point, you don't have a rifle.
If i had to carry my mossberg into harms way i'd ferdarnsure have slugs with me, too.
