Here's jsut a few pics of what I tried to fix. The shotgun in question is a Model 12 winchester, serial # 6611XXX. Found by a friend in an old wooden box that he knew he had his father's guns in but had family concerns, had to buy a safe before getting them out of storage.

Most of the surface rust wasn't bad - I used Hoppes and steel wool 0000 to get most of it off. The barrel looks to have fared better than the reciever. The brown color of the receiver doesn't want to go away - I have coated it with CLP liberally and will let it soak for a few days before I rub it a little again.

The internals look great - probably because they were never cleaned. The bolt was completely black when I pulled it, lucky to ever get the thing back in - she don't break down like an 870.

Any ideas on what I can do to further protect the metal before giving it back to this meathead? :)

Slap a heavy coat of R.I.G. grease on it before you give it back.

Keep it...He doesn't deserve such a fine shotgun if he's gonna treat it like that...

You did everything right. Buy a bottle of Hoppes oil and give it to your friend.
Make him oil the gun all over the surface and make him keep it oiled.

Don't worry about a refinish, not worth it.

No need to loose a fine gun like the model 12 through neglect.
