I bought an older Euroarms 1858 Remmy, with an R&D conversion cylinder, and want to start reloading for it. I bought a Lee Classic from Midway to reload with, as I won't be doing a really large number of shells. The nice man I bought it from is being very helpful to the newbie, but I can't decide what powder I want to use. He used Unique with it when he had it, but I'm leaning towards more smoke and flames. Needless to say I'd like to keep it safe and not damage me or the weapon.
I've been doing searches but can't get a good feel for what BP sub to use. From what I see it might be better to use Pyrodex RS over P so as to produce less pressure? How about using APP, would that do well in a cartridge?
It'll be a few weeks before I start actually doing any reloading so there's no great hurry.

Just use real black. 3F size.

Try 28 gr (volume measure) of 2Fg with a 255 gr cast RNFP. The originals were loaded with 37-40 gr but 28 gr will be a pleasant enough round to shoot. Unless your going after bear all you need is enough powder to get the bullet to the paper/target.

I use Goex Cowboy, and put enough in to get about 1/16-1/8" of compression. Makes lots of nice smoke when shooting. :)
