Went to Alman's gunshop today with dad. When we were digging through the long gun racks I found a sporter enfield. I thought no big deal, but dad is a big enfield nut and started to look at it closer. What he found is a SMLE #1* with the rear volley sight 1903 action that matches itself with a 1904 metford rifled barrel ! Soon after we were at the counter paying the $109 required and he has a new SMLE! Now we have to find a new stock and hardware.

1904 Metford rifled barrel?

Huh?

I think something is wrong there.

The Metford rifling had been dropped nearly a decade before when it was found that the cordite propellant ate the Metford rifling for lunch.

As far as I know production of Metford rifled barreles stopped around 1894-95, and no more were made, not even as replacements.

If it's a No. 1 Mk I it should have one of the charger guides on the bolt head, the other on the receiver bridge.

Pretty damned cool find. It's a pity someone chopped the stock.

I may be wrong on the rifling It just looked odd to me and I assumed and yes it does have the "floating" clip guide on the bolt.

Be sure and check the head space before you shoot it. Bubba'd Enfields are notorious for bad head space.

Since it is an SMLE, it has Enfield rifling. That is what the "E" means.
