Is it worth it to pick up a pre-ban AR lower?

I've been thinking about picking up for a couple reasons. A threaded barrel I should be able to get a sound supressor for it, and geta nice legal tele-stock. I know they're pretty damn pricy but still thinking of it. With the whole ban sunset on the way though I'm kinda backtracking my own thinking here.
Anybody else thinking the same things?
Not to mention give them all a big FU with my scarry evil black gun:rolleyes:

The whole thing pretty much boils down to two things: do you believe the ban is going to sunset ? What do you plan to do with the rifle ?
Obviously if you are convinced the ban is going to sunset, there would be no point in buying a "pre-ban" rifle right now unless you simply can't wait or don't care about the premium price. On the other hand, if you consider the issue in doubt, then there is no time like the present to buy. I would bet that if the law is renewed or even made worse, the price of "pre-ban" rifles is going to be even higher than it is now.
Buying a pre-ban rifle isn't all about the bayonet lug, collapsable stock, flash suppressor and all that. If you want to add a suppressor to the rifle, you need to get a pre-ban since ATF considers a sound suppressor to also be a flash suppressor. If you want to register an upper as an SBR, you can do that with a post-ban rifle. But, if you want to register an upper as an SBR, and install a bi-lock so you can mount a suppressor, again, you need a pre-ban to do it.
I personally would look around and see what is available. I would let price dictate what I did. If you ran into a good deal, buy it. I have purchased three pre-ban rifles in the past year. Two of them were $1000/each. That is more than the going rate for a post-ban rifle, but not all that much more. I considered it worthwhile for me. I probably wouldn't be spending $1300 or more for a pre-ban unless I had good reason to, such as the suppressor. I did pay $1300 for a NIB, pre-ban, Colt Lightweight Sporter in 9mm, but that was a pretty good deal for that rifle. I wasn't so much concerned with the fact that it was pre-ban.

Also remember that if you're only getting the lower, ATF will not consider it Pre-ban if you can't prove it was assembled in Pre-ban config originally.

I figure as long as it's something like a Colt where the SN is trackable there shouldn't be a problem. There's always preban only uppers for sale.

Chipperman nailed it. Under the current interpretation of the AW ban by ATF, you may not assemble a pre-ban configured firearm from a receiver regardless of the date of manufacture.
The receiver may have been made prior to 9/13/94, but you are assembing the rifle now, so it is post-ban. Only firearms that were completely assembled into an "assault weapon" configuration prior to the beginning of the ban are considered pre-ban. It is even prohibited to take a gun such as a pre-ban Ruger Mini-14 with a standard wood stock and replace that stock with a folding stock. The "assault weapon" was created after the ban.
So, buy a post-ban and wait until next year for the threaded upper or purchase a complete pre-ban AR.

What 444 says and then there won't be such a thing as pre-ban.

Well, the way you phrased the question, it is true you can't put together a rifle in pre-ban configuration. If you are talking about simply buying a complete rifle that is pre-ban then that is a different story. I don't know where you would buy a stripped lower that is supposed to be pre-ban.
