So I was pretty much set to get a Stevens 200 in .30-06 for $289, but I came across a NIB Remington 700ADL for $325 and was wondering if it's worth the extra $36 for the Remington. I've heard nothing but good things about the Stevens, and don't know much about the 700ADL.

I would get the ADL. Not because i dislike the Stevens. I think they are good guns. I just like the fit and finish better than the Stevens. Especially the stock.

Stevens. You can upgrade it infinitely, without having to send it to some overpriced gunsmith for 8 weeks. And it will probably shoot better out of the box.

Hmmm, that's a tough one. I might go either way. That is so cheap for a Remington, I can't understand how anyone would go for the 770.

In this case, I think I might go Remington even though I am a big-time Savage fan.

I just purchased the Stevens Model 200 - it's a Savage so in my opinion a very solid rifle. I'll throw the scope on this week and try to get out this weekend and sight it in and throw some lead down range. I'm going to use the .243 for varmint only - at least that's the plan for now.

Remington is a higher quality action...the barreled action is worth that IMHO The Savage rifles usually shoot great...they have historically (maybe a few exceptions...the 99 come to mind) been cheap somewhat fugly rifles at a great price with a lot of cheap parts and assemblies. That really hasn't changed over the years from the 50's to present day IMHO. That said they generally will shoot alongside rifles costing 2-3 times their price...but there's no cure for terminal ugly. I'm more of a mauser guy myself...but I'd take the remington.

I would get the Stevens. #1 I believe that they are better shooters out of the box. #2 If you want to up grade them they are very easy to work on, exchange barrels, stocks, what ever...

Both are fine guns, I have the Stevens in .308, and it did a heart/lung shot on it's first trip out, got a freezer full, but with the Remington's fit an finish, accuracy and after market goodies, it would be up to the stock. Is it wood? The choice is yours to make.

I have a Savage 111 in .243 (.260 at the moment) (pre accutrigger). It shoots great, but it has the "long" short action which makes scopes hard to mount as the long action Savage is long. I also have had a Remington 700 (ADL and BDL). The Remingtons have not been as accurate, but they sure feed better and look a lot nicer.

I own and have owned several of both (Savage), for about the same price my choice would definitely be the Remington.

Usually I'd say Steven but a NIB 700 ADL sounds a little too good to be true.

Remington is the better rifle. However, the Stevens is cheaper than the Remington to where you can buy an upgrade stock for the Stevens, which would then make it the better choice. Remington will still have the better action/barrel - but a good quality stock trumps anything else at this price point. Whichever of these sits in the better stock will not only be more enjoyable to shoot, but will increase the accuracy, value and feel.

I disagree. There's nothing in the Remington action that makes it higher quality or a better action. It will have the higher resale value - just as a Ford once had a higher resale value over a Plymouth - but not a Dodge. This is the exact same thing, the Plymouth was just the very basic Dodge. Stevens is just the very basic Savage. However, in performance, quality of action and barrel, the Stevens will be equal to the Remington. Action wise, the Remington is no better and in the ADL, the finish is certainly no better.

Where the Remington shines is the fact the ADL is not the bottom line Remington, even if it is the bottom line 700. But the Remington 700 ADL will not have a better action nor a better barrel. It will have a better resale value, however.

I just got a 700 ADL .30-06 with iron sights as an early Christmas present from Wal Mart for $325. It does have the j-lock but I understand you can upgrade the bolt shroud and get rid of it fairly easy.

I love my Steven in 223 but the asthetics will always favor the Remmy....of which I have owned/own a few!

Years ago I'd say grab the 700. Not so today. The 700 of 30 years past is a far cry from those of today. The quality simply isn't there. Sure the Stevens could use a trigger and possibly a stock upgrade, but I believe it is truly the better rifle..........Essex

I went to wally world this afternoon to get the 700 but walked out with a Savage 110 with the accutrigger, and scope combo for $364. From what I've been seeing that's a decent deal on the savage 110 with accutrigger, but probably not as good as the 700 deal.

I tried to like the remmi but I just didn't. I liked the action, stock, finish and safety better on the savage, and overall it just 'felt' better to me. I'll put a burris on in it in place of the simmons and throw the simmons on a .22 and will be into the whole deal for around $525.

Either way I have a deer rifle now. - went with the .30-06

Hey, you got the rifle that best suited you. I seriously doubt you will ever regret that decision. When I bought my first center fire, it ended up being a Savage over the Remington and, what I thought would be my favorite, the Winchester 70.
