What does it cost to have a barrel chopped down? I would like to have a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk reduced to 4".

As an example, Clark Custom Guns (http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/index.htm) quotes these prices:
Cut barrel, recrown, reinstall front sight on Ruger Blackhawk - $95.00
Cut barrel, recrown, reinstall front sight on Ruger Bisley - $120.00
I imagine other gunsmiths will be in the same range. You'll probably have to pay more if a barrel sleeve has to be cut as well (e.g. the S&W 686, etc.). However, the standard Redhawk doesn't have this problem.

Wow! Clark's prices are pretty cheap.
I contacted another shop in PA and got the following information:
To cut down a barrel, install a new front sight system, and re-crown is $189, Removing the writing and polishing the barrel is $30, and $35 to prep and reblue the barrel.
Moonclip conversions are $75 and trigger jobs are $60
A minimum of 3 guns of similar work will get a package deal discount of 10%.
