most "intimidating" handgun?

now dont get me wrong, i have no urge to have any handgun pointed at me, but in your opinion what would be the most intimidating handgun to draw on someone or to have drawn on you?

really, pick one. dont just say any...we all know that ;)

for me it would probably be a 44 Special smith snubbie. just the sight of such a small revolver with such a large bore is intimidating. even more so than the N frames i think.

i always thought some of the movie intimidators were silly, like a Ti nitride golden desert eagles... come on now, thats just silly :D

BBL length has a lot to do with it. Back in the old days, some folks wouldn't mess with lil ol me b/c of the 6" revolver I use to carry.

4v50 Gary, it is an interesting observation you make regarding barrel length's relationship to intimidating image. I have heard from some police officers that some of their "customers," ignorant in the area of firearms, perceive potency in the size of the handgrips. Large grips, such as S&W target grips, are equated with Magnum power, no matter the caliber of the handgun.

To quote the Guru from Texas (see here (http://www.thunderranchinc.com/articles/quotes.htm) for source):
"You can say ‘stop’ or ‘alto’ or use any other word you think will work, but I’ve found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone’s head is pretty much the universal language."
I tend to agree... That said, I think a S&W N-frame in .44 or .45 is a good start, as are the Ruger, Dan Wesson, Colt and Taurus equivalents. In semi-auto, a .45 is also good. I know a few folks who've brightly polished the crown of the barrel of their carry guns for the "intimidation" effect, and believe me, looking down a brightly-crowned .45 muzzle is certainly intimidating!

I guess perhaps the best candidate on general sale right now is the S&W .500 Magnum. Man, that thing is BIG! :what:

Kind of the opposite (but same idea) of what Kenneth said - I have a blue 45 Officers Model with a very bright polished full bull barrel that just looks mean. My snubbie with the laser grip will also get the necessary attention as will my 4" nickel 44 mag with visible Gold Dot HPs.

Andrew wyatt, i was gonna put another vote in for the 1911, but mostly the older ones from the 20's and 30's. the real gangster and fed pistols.

something about a really simple no frills 1911 is very intimidating.

I haven't had the "pleasure" of looking at the business end of one, but I guess a Serbu Super Shorty, (a Mossberg 12 gauge pump cut down into a pistol) would be quite intimidating.

The double shotgun pistols like the 20 gauge Ithaca Auto Burglar would be impressive too, I think.

http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=454SS6M&category=Revolver

that Raging Bull 454 Casull... the sheer size of the gun, size of the hole, and the heft of the barrel and high rib, make it look pretty scary

and of course the desert eagle.

Matthew_Q

I call the intimidation brought on by a gun and it's appearance as the gun's 'fecalation factor'

FECALATION FACTOR:

How much a given gun would make an attacker would crap his pants upon seeing said handgun pointed at him.

FF is higher for big, large bored, shiny pistols.

I have to narrow down the specific rules and come up with a point scale for it.

Of course, a pump action 12ga would probably have about the highest FF of any defense weapon.

Um, yeah. Ever look at where the sights are pointed when a gun is held homey-style? Hollywood isn't real, don't get training advice from it.

Most gunfights happen within 7 yards, and people STILL miss. -The reason is because everyone is moving during a gunfight, no one stops long enough to be intimidated by the other guy's gun.

Most gunfights happen within 7 yards, and people STILL miss. -The reason is because everyone is moving during a gunfight, no one stops long enough to be intimidated by the other guy's gun

most muggings happen at way less of a distance. and many people surprised at gunpoint stand still.

im not going to argue with you. holding your pistol sideways or upside down or whatever homies do now is stupid, but up real close and personal even if you close your eyes you will probably hit something if you keep pulling the trigger, as long as you dont care what/who it is.

I'm really glad nobody's mentioned one of those stupid, garish, chrome- or gold-plated Desert Egos. Now if only Hollyweird would get a hint. The evil female character in the latest Charlie's Angels flick looked just plain stupid with those! :scrutiny:

Believe it or not, I'd almost say a small .22 or .25 would be as, if not more intimidating than a large gun as the chances of actually being shot may be greater. The reason is that the owner may be nervous, and more willing to shoot you while he knows he still has the upper hand before you have a chance to do something. Someone with a larger gun may feel more confident that intimidation alone will get him what he wants, and not feel as if he'll actually have to shoot. This may sound farfetched, but think about it for a minute before condemning it.

None of the above mentioned machines intimidate me. It's the "look" and the "eyes" of the person holding it.

A basket case, psycho, inept oaf or space cadet holding a rubber band ready to shoot a mangled paper clip at my head is more intimidating than a competent, together fellow pointing a hogleg at me. The former folks don't appear to always have their brain engaged while the latter do.

Of the pistols in my collection...I'd have to go with my HK USP Tactical .45...the thing is just big, it got a shark fin for a front sight, and the extra bit of barrel sticking out of the slide makes the bore look like a train tunnel. I've got 3 other .45s (Kimber and USGI 1911s, and a Sig 220) and none of their bores look as big.

Any of the above, you are in deep caca.
The size of the of the impliment is not as important as the Willingness to use it to take human life!
I can say that my LW Officer's model, blued with an aftermarket Kings stainless bushing probably looks quite nasty from the wrong end....but they are only gonna see it in the last seconds of their existence. It will never be shown to intimidate. Drawn with the loud command to 'drop your weapon NOW'.....then their weapon hits the ground or the holder does with two large holes in his sternum, two larger ones out his back.

For sheer visual effect, leaving out any "extra" things like psycho guy holding the gun. My vote goes to an antique known as the Trantor .577 revolver. Ross Siefried(sp?) wrote an article for Gun & Ammo several years back showing the huge business end of the gun. Wow! Bowen made a custom .577 on a Redhawk frame at one time, but it had to be registered as a DD, because it used cartridges larger than .50 caliber. Either one would be impressive.
