I came across a Colt Defender Plus. 45 ACP , Series 90 with an aluminum frame today. It has had one owner and the gun has never been fired and it is 100 percent condition. The guy wants $500 for it. I am absolutely positive the gun has a "clean record". I am thinking of buying it just because it is priced so low.

Have others run into similar situations? What did you do (buy or not buy)? What was the outcome (fell in love with the gun, sold for profit, sold for loss, collecting dust...)?

I have never bought a gun JUST because it was cheap but that has been a driving force behind some of my purchases. Most of the time, I want the gun and it is priced right. I wouldn't buy a gun that I didn't like or want just because it is cheap, unless it was give-a-way cheap.

Some times the outcome is good, bad or just so-so. Sometimes it is a way of trying a gun that you might never have thought that you would like. I bought/traded for a S&W 586 before I started getting into revolvers and it turned out to be one of the best guns I have ever owned. It is what got me back into shooting revolvers.

My first M-1 Carbine was $100. I was shocked at the price (old price even for 1977) and bought it immediately. But ahh, we're talking handguns. Came across one co-worker trying to sell another his S&W model 36. While the other guy was deliberating on the price of $125, I offered to buy it right then and there. :) "Hey, wait a minute!" says the guy who was deliberating. "Too late. It's mine," says I. :D

Yes, frequently. If I find a really good deal on a gun, I'll buy it, whether I need it or not. Reason is, they make great trading stock! I've several times gone into a gunshop with half-a-dozen guns that I bought for very reasonable prices, got a better deal on trade-in values (frequently scoring 50%-75% more than I paid), and walked out with two or three guns I really wanted. Most recent example: I traded a Fabarm semi-auto shotgun, Navy Arms black-powder Remington 1858 Army replica (stainless steel), a Glock 30 and a rather worn S&W that needed some major repairs, and walked out with a Sig P220, a S&W 625, and a Saiga carbine in 7.62x39. Retail price of the three purchases was over $1,500. My actual cost (i.e. what I paid for the traded guns) was about $900, plus $112 in cash. Not the best trade I've ever made, but pretty good, for a saving of about a third on what I would otherwise have had to pay. Of course, going for expensive guns like SIG's and S&W 625's is a trading handicap! :D

If i find a gun i've wanted priced right i'll buy it if i can afford it (by afford i mean more than easily, not as in i have just enough in the bank account). There are however, a lot of guns i want.

I always keep a long mental list of the guns I might someday want to own (which is pretty much all of them) and when I come across a good deal on one of them I usually jump on it. So, it's not strictly that they are good prices. Also, a good price will make me take a second or third look at a gun that might not have been on the list.

Most folks would call habitual gun purchasing an addiction. But hey, we gun junkies have to get our fix don't we? ;) As every local gun shop owner has said to me at least 10 times over the last 10 years "it's only money".

Occasionally a good deal just happens upon me and I just can't resist. If anything I can always shoot my new aquisition and if we don't agree I can always sell it.

My two current favorite handguns where both examples of this phenominimonomomo (SIC)

Colt Combat Commander, lightly used for $375. I was about to spring for a USP C .45 or a Springfield when I expressed a small amount of dismay at the approx $600 price tags. The dealer shows me a hiden gem, behind the counter, perfect, CCC in great condition with Matte finish. I put a ambi safety on it and love it. 600 rds and counting, no issues.

FN HiPOWER Police model with SFS for $430. I was looking for a GP100 or some such at a local gunshow ... I saw the HIPO and really liked the handling, features etc. An older gentleman and I were examining the dealers three specimens at the same time. Having never owned nor knew nuthin about P35's I was attentively watching and listening to this apparently experienced gentleman. He was impressed with the pieces as well as the $$ asked. But, he and I both thought it better to think it over.
I went home, posted an inquiry here at THR and got back some great replies quickly (WildAlaska etc...).
I went back to the show the next morning and lo and behold, the same older gent I had been speaking with the day before is there buying one of the dealers HIPOs. He and I had a great laugh, as we gladly handed over our cash.
Not only a great deal I believe, mainly because this gun is the best 9mm I HAVE EVER SHOT and is quickly becoming my gun of choice, but I made a new friend that I have enjoyed spending time with.

At $400, price was a big (though definitely not the only) consideration in my purchase of my XD40. That, and it's features, performance, and the overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth I've heard. But yeah, the price sold me on it, otherwise, I'd probably have jonesed for a Glock 19.

And if it turns out that we don't get along, that low price makes it easy to trade away without losing, sometimes you can even come out on top... :D

I recently bought a Kahr K-9 (black finish) for $350, but we didn't connect, so I traded it, even, for a Glock 21, 3rd generation, in the box with three 10 rd. mags.

I am much happier with the Glock and it only cost me $350!!! :D

Kahr Mk9 450 brand new. I never shoot it. I much prefer the t9.
Probably sell it or trade it when I buy a Combat Commander.(Birthday present to myself)

Yes. I bought my S&W Model 29 used for $200 from a co-worker. He didn't like the recoil. I figured I could trade it for something I really wanted but it shot so well I fell in love with it. I put a Leopold Gilmore Red Dot on it and it's now one of my favorites.

P.S. My neighbor's daughter (16 y.o.) used it last fall to kill a 10 point white tail. The girl is about 5'4'' and weighs maybe 110 lbs. She dropped the deer with one shot at 55 yrds. Don't remember what ammo she was using.

I bought my first FEG (pa-63)at a gun show because the price was right. (just over 100 bucks I think.) I bought my second because I wanted a BHP, and Brady 1 was about to go into effect. So I shopped around, couldn't find a Masuer SA-80 so i ordered the FEG. Still the best value in a handgun i ever got.

Then again I bought my New Service Colt for $275. That was one I just could NOT pass up.

I bought a Savage 300 Win Mag from a guy because he practically gave it away. I think after sighting it in, I know why he sold it so cheap. Light composite stock, light barrel, ouch.

I bought my S&W Model 19 .357 because I wanted a car gun and I got it for cheap. I bought my Makarov because it was cheap, solid, and totally cool. I was just browsing that day, but I had decided to by a Makarov already, and was just waiting for a nice one at the right price. I bought my Kel-Tec P-11 because it was light weight, compact, and I knew three other people who liked the ones they had. It's my main carry gun, and I didn't make that decision based on money, even though it's a bargain. I don't think anybody should buy a carry gun based only upon price.

I think we all keep a mental list of guns we would like to have if we ever stumbled across them at the right price. I've turned down some great deals on guns I would never shoot myself. I'm not a collector, or looking to turn a buck on one.

I buy guns simply because they are for sale. :) That is one reason I have greatly reduced the number of gun shows I attend. Absolutely no willpower when I see a gun that I decide I like.

Yep, I've bought just because of the price. I try to get a gun with a good reputation when I do this, something I may be able to trade later. It's not unusual for the gun to become a favorite though.

This is how I got into SA revolvers.

I've done it a couple of times on different occasions! Examples are; my Colt SP1 for $600, Daewoo pre-ban K-2 for $550, Rem. 870 for $125. The last one was a LNIB Glock 17 w/ 1 hi-cap for $275. :)
All of them I don't really need ( I prefer AK's than AR variants and I already have a Winchester 1300), but I knew I won't get any sleep for maybe a week if I pass it up! :D

I've done it. Bought on impulse because a gun was for sale at a good price. It was also usually the first gun I sold later on when I needed cash.

The bottom line is that the purchase price of an item is soon forgotten. You'll make more money to cover the purchase eventually regardless. What remains is just how valuable that particular item is to you later down the road. The ones you bought simply because they were a good deal rarely ever establish any real pride of ownership.

On the other hand, several times I bought a gun that was priced a little steep, but was the very gun I had been after for awhile. In almost every case I've kept that gun, and the price was soon forgotten.
