Hi all. I have a question.

I recently heard about some sort of device for shotguns used to disperse and shape the pattern of shot fired from a shotgun. I'm really just curious. What exactly is the idea behind this? If it shapes the shot pattern, can slugs still be used? Is it a permanent part of the barrel, or is it easily removable?
