Boy, is that a loaded question! The Encore in a 458 lott or 470 Nitro or various .50's, something of that kind has to be the max,
Revolvers: 45/70 or 500 Linebaugh Max currently, 500 S&W coming to a dealer near you. The 475 Linebaugh and 454 Casull are neither one lightweight. All the above make a .44 seem more like a .22.
Autos the 50 AE Automag V(?) takes this with little real competition. I standard size autos the kick king is 1911 in 460 rowlands, although there may be a a HK USP running around in something bigger, but since I haven't seen it for myself, I don't know that it is real. Glock 29 gets a little sharp with full power 10mm.

Yeah, Ive heard that the 454 Casull had a nice little kick. I was just looking at the Magnum Research website they have a 444Marlin revolver? Dang what a handgun.:)

You're right I didn't include a derringer class, I personally can't shoot them, so I forget they exist. Didn't one of those derringer companies make a 50/110 winchester? I can't imagine!

No but I have fire a 30-06 T/C Encore. Makes a 454 seem sane.:what:

Go to:

http://www.john-ross.net/recoil.htm

to see why recoil velocity is much more relevant than recoil energy.

The short answer: Among repeating handguns made by major manufacturers, shooting factory ammo, the two worst recoiling would be

S&W 11 0z. ti/scan .357 J-frame with 158 grain full power .357 loads, and

S&W 329 27 ounce .44 mag shooting 310 grain Garrett hammerheads or equivalent. With factory grips and this load, this gun is almost unshootable. With Decelerators it is not pleasant, but manageable.

I have fired both of these. They are much worse than the S&W .500 even when shooting my 650 grain slugs at over 1300 FPS. I actually enjoy this load with the Sorbothane grip.

The worst (most unpleasant) repeating handgun with handloads is the 396 18 ounce .44 Special with 250s @ 1150 (Keith loads). Awful.

The 45/70 in the BFR looks intimidating, but is nothing (in my experience) compared to a Freedom Arms .454 Casull. A box of shells cut the webbing of my hand.

lycanthrope,

I think the difference in reccoil between those two particular revolvers would be a matter of load selection. Mild factory 45/70's would never compare to a 454, but a full power 45/70 is another story. Having shot several big bore single actions, I am currenly planing my own. It will be either a 480 Ruger of 49 Special. I am planing on 300-400 grain bullets in the mid-high subsonic range. Recoil will be around top 44 magnum levels (which is plenty). To be honest, I'll never even hunt with it. Just for fun.

You could say that was... almost... 1 shot stopping power?

maybe?

Shooting factory loads the Ruger 454 casull wasn't that bad. When we switched over to the handloads...:what: :what: OUCH!!! is putting it mildly!

So, not that bad you say? :D I'm dreaming of a T/C with a couple barrels (and maybe both frames)... Encore for .223, 30-06, .308, or .45-70, or the G2 frame so I can shoot .223, .22LR, .17HMR, or .38/.357 instead.

Well Bowen could make a sub 30 oz 475, I don't know that anyone could shoot it though. He has made a 26 oz SA revolver in 50 AE using titanium (sp).

T/C Contender 35 Rem. 14" bull barrel kicked out of my hand. Once. I grabbed the barrel as it went over my shoulder. Wiped my hand off, wiped the grip dry, finished the round and sold that barrel a couple days later.

I also owned a 458 Safari grade Remington. Bought it and 20 rounds of ammo. Sold it and ten rounds of ammo a few months later.

But really, the worst hurt was from a 4" Mod 29 with 240 factory loads. I could shoot all six rounds of a full charge 41 and hit, and even fired a qualification course with full loads and shot expert, but a single 44 round invariably stopped me.

Far as that went, I'd take a 300 H&H over an '06. The 30-06 felt like it slapped me, but the H&H shoved me.

Well, the American Derringer Alaskan Model, in .45-70, gave me a big wake-up call once.

Otherwise, when I need my sinuses cleared, and convert a goodly bit of WW748 into noise, flash, and recoil:

I have a Bond Arms derringer in 44 magnum. With 260 grain partition gold loads, its absolutely horrible. It makes my Freedom Arms 454 feel like a sissy gun. Not only is the gun only 20 ounces but the grip shape is not the most forgiving. Of all the ones I've shot, I have to say the derringer takes the cake for leaving the most lasting impression. GS

the worse one i have ever shot was the 45/70 in a contender. the ground shook, the hens quit laying and my neighbor got kicked by a horse!

after five rounds of the 45/70 i couldn't shoot worth a dern for the rest of the day. i flinched shooting a .38 special.

As far as I have personally fired:

I think the DE 50AE's are rough, but my friend who owns one says my Redhawk .44 is worse. I think some of the DE is just intimidation factor.

But, so far the worst recoil, the one where I took one shot and then put the rest of the ammo away goes to my SP101 with handloads of 19 grains of H110 pushing a 125 grain bullet. HURT! Very sharp recoil, huge muzzle flash, and a strong concussion!

In the theoritical realm, aside from Encore stuff, I figure lightweight bigbores, and large caliber revolvers like 454, 500 linebaugh, etc would be the worst.
