Questions about my upcoming military enrollment

As you all already know, I'm supposed to be drafted into the Israeli Defence Force on the 17th of August. Due to my medical background, I can be only drafted into rear-line units, where I will literally be sent on leave every day (and sleep at home! Wow!). It is still likely that I will be issued an assault rifle of some form (supposedly, either an M16A1 or a Galil), which I will be supposed to carry on and off duty. Any advice on off-duty storage of the gun and ammunition?

If you are to carry your issued weapon on and off duty, I advise you to store the weapon within arms reach (over your shoulder) and store ammunition in magazines with one inserted into the magazine well.:neener:

Obviously I am not familiar with your situation, however carrying a rifle around (all the time) sounds like a pain (until you need it). Maybe your medical facility has a weapons storage area for when you are working or if you are disabled for some reason, then you could locate your weapon in a place that allows easy access as well as security. Ammo should be close by and pre-loaded into magazines. Same rules apply to loaded magazines. Rotate them occasionally. Clean weapon very regularly as it will be out and about constantly, not in a relatively clean arms room. You might cover the muzzle with a latex finger cot or condom depending on conditions. Sorry, I just don't have enough background.

Uhm, I might have not made it sufficiently clear: "Medical background" refers to my medical record (psychological examinations), not any knowledge of medicine.

When off-duty I will walk out of the military facility with the rifle , if one is indeed issued. I am to return with it next morning, of course:) , but as far as I understand, if I, say, go on a date in my free time (fat chance), I don't have to carry it around. So if I do leave it at home for some reason how should I store it? How do you safely store a fully-automatic 5.56 mm weapon anyway?

Seems like a question you should ask the people who issue the rifle and insist you take it home with you.

They "solve" the problem by giving a three-year sentence to everybody whose rifle gets stolen.

Then ask them how they expect you to store it. Ask for recommendations.

Worse comes to worse, get a cable, a lock, and run it through the mag well with the bolt back, and fasten it to your wrist while you sleep.

You think THAT is necessary?

Besides, what do I do when I'm not home?

You can store it at my house. I'll take good care of it.

Best option keep it at their armory
2nd Best - your gunsafe (or get one)
3rd Best Heavy Cable through magazine well and out of open ejection port cover. Secure Cable to mean dog.
(I used #3 for a while in the US Marine Corps, dog was the devil model)

the cable/chain idea seems to be a good one, do you have any pipes or other solid things you could chain it around in your home?

Place into sturdy wood container and mail to me c/o THR. ;)

Ask when you are issued it. A lot of guys just toss it into the corner. It's like Switzerland, they're so common, nobody thinks about it. I wish we could do the same here.
